Just a note to let you all know that I am speaking at the annual Hurricane Watch Net conference on Feb. 7 in Miami.
My topic will be my team's work during Claudette and Isabel and where we are headed for this season and beyond.
The HWN- Hurricane Watch Net, is made up of mostly HAM operators, but now, with the Wireless Web, anyone who wishes to email the NHC and HWN a legitimate hurricane observation may do so. Of course, you don't need Wireless Web to do it- anyone with a home weather station could send in online reports to the HWN. They then relay your info to the NHC forecasters and they take it from there.
Usually, it is the HAM operators who provide info to the NHC. They have proven critial in memorable events such as Mitch, Gilbert and Hugo. Also, island nations send info via the HWN to the NHC through HAM operators.
My talk will be 20 minutes and will include info about the Hurricane Intercept Research Team and our work to date. The HWN president, John McHugh, asked me to speak. Guess who comes after me? None other than Stacey Stewart. He is awesome to listen to- I've heard him speak several times. This is going to be a great event to recognize the HAM operators and vounteers of the HWN as well as to look into new technology- such as what we are using with my field team.

HAM operators
Although I am not a licensed HAM operator, my team does have one with us. He is John Van Pelt out of Raliegh, NC. He used his portable HAM during Lili and provided the HWN with info through something called IRLP. John was later acknowledged for his work with my team during Lili- through the use of this IRLP.
Obviously, with the use of Wireless Web, folks like me and my team can send back real-time data to our site or the NHC. But, when a monster hurricane comes rolling in, we'll rely on John and his HAM radio to keep folks informed as to what conditions we have.
