It looks like the big bad storms might be trying a north hook again...

However, after 2003, I will accept this opportunity to not shovel the snow.

What if we strike a deal, Jeb? I try to keep all my hot air in the heat island of Arlington/DCA and encourage any cold air that tries to sink into my lowlands to visit the outer burbs such as Woodbridge?

Agreed, arlwx!! I can use all the cold air I can get this "winter" LOL. All I wanted was a little snow......................................

now Snow in Old Town Alexandria

#22 Postby jtuckermartin » Sat Jan 17, 2004 7:31 pm

Precip has shifted from sleet to snow/sleet with a good coating on all surfaces in Old Town Alexandria. Very pretty right now but the roads here are a sheet of ice. Interesting to see the snow appear. Lets hope its a good sign of a bust in our favor for once. Going for a walk to enjoy it while it lasts!

730 pm..........................

Temperature, 30 degrees. Dewpoint, 19 degrees. No precip at the moment, though this radar shows otherwise.

The winds are south at 3 mph, pressure is 30.01 and falling.

I went outside and almost fell right on my @ss!!! LOL LOL LOL!!!! It only looked wet so like a dumb@ss I walked right out there like it was 60 degrees and drizzle!! Geeze, I almost got hurt on that ice!!!

My driveway is slick with big sleet balls and ice. Patches of the road are likewise. The car is covered with sleet balls and ice. No precip is falling right now, but we are below freezing so if anymore of that sleet or frzrain comes down, we are going to have some icing issues.

This is what must have happened: Back when the sleet started to fall, the road temps were a little warm. The sleet melted, and more sleet fell, the temps fell to 30 degrees and more sleet kept falling and the surface became icy like it is right now. Please don't try to drive tonight folks!!! It's DANGEROUS!!!!!

I'll keep you all updated through the evening. Freezing rain changing to rain by 9pm! Yeah, Right!!! Boy that sidewalk is slippery!!!

This is NO TIME for a jebwalk!!!!!

9pm...............................

It's 29 degrees and 23 degree dewpoints and still we have light sleet and light snow. Some of the flakes are getting bigger.............................

Pressure is 29.97 and falling; winds are ESE at 5 mph. We have a quarter to third of an inch of sleet and snow on roads, sidewalks, car tops and on the grass, where it is just becoming visible.

On the radar, we can see a bubble to our west. After that bubble passes, then sleet, snow, and later, freezing rain will continue through at least 2am tomorrow morning. I don't think the light sleet and snow will change over until 2am.

Til then, conditions remain treacherous, with 29 degrees and light sleet and light snow over the N VA region.

I'll keep ya updated.

9:00 and finally some sleet here in Fredericksburg. Even though it looked like a lot of precip here on radar, it just now started.
Jeb, enjoy the snow- send some a little south for me. 32.7 degrees dp 12

10pm update folks...........................

See this radar?

See the clear area to the west of Woodbridge?

That's The Bubble. All the precip is moving from west to east, and The Bubble is gonna move through Woodbridge. We still have light sleet and a little light snow. The temp is 29 with a dewpoint of 23. Pressure is 29.93 and winds are ESE at 5mph.

The roads are covered with sleet balls and snow, which has frozen into ice.

The hill right in front of my house has become a regular attraction. Folks are having a really hard time trying to get up the hill. That sleet has frozen up but good. It's slippery. I can hear somebody really spinning their wheels trying to get some traction, trying to get up the hill. 'The Little Engine That Could" LOL LOL!!!

It beats me why on this night, of all times, people try to drive on this sleet sheet of ice?

This one guy was trying so hard to get up the hill. You could hear him spinning those wheels so hard. That sound is synonymous with panic and pure, unbridled desperation. He just couldn't get any traction, and he spun and spun those wheels. I bet the whole neighborhood could hear it. So he and his buddies got out and looked their situation over. They walked around the van and looked all around, then the driver got in and spun the wheels some more. His buddies proceeded to get in back of the van and push! One of them tried to push too hard, lost his footing on the icy roadway, and slid backwards and landed facefirst on the road. He was okay, only his pride was bruised. With three people pushing on the back of the van and the driver giving it the gas, well, they were sliding back down the hill LOL LOL LOL!!!

No way I was gonna go out there!!! Man this is NO time for a jebwalk!!! That road is icy!!! It's NUTS to try and walk on that ice!! I've seen folks fall and break their arms, wrists, or legs. No way I was gonna do that tonight!

Well, they parked the van on the side of the foot of the hill and walked home.

That's always a good decision. Tomorrow it'll be 47 degrees and the ice will be gone.

It's getting treacherous out there.

Take a look at this:

Few little tiny itty bitty flakes of snow in the air in Old Town Alexandria. Weird storm up here. Will be interesting to see what kind of precip we get when the radar fills back in. As of now 1/4 inch maybe of snow/sleet on ground and roads- no time to be driving is right.

This radar also shows some precip in Fredricksburg....

Hello friend Cheesy Poofs! What's going on over there in Howard Co.?

This is certainly turning into one interesting storm. Radar seems to be slowly filling in somewhat to the west of DC. Temps have been holding steady here in Leetown, WV pretty much all evening. Currenlty 26F. I have a feeling this cold air is going to be tough to erode in some areas.

1200 Midnight Jan 17/18.......................

Temperature is yo-yoing back and forth between 29 and 30, dewpoint is 24 degrees, winds are SSE at 2 mph, pressure is 29.88 and falling,
and we now have light to moderate freezing rain.

The temperature is 29 at the moment, and the frzra is falling, and striking objects which are nice and cold, they are at 29 degrees, and its been dark since 6pm, so things are icing up. My car is covered with ice, and icing up even more as I speak. That freezing rain just keeps falling, and the radar shows more and more freezing rain to our west, steadily moving toward the FA.

Have a look at this radar. It shows that The Bubble never moved through Woodbridge. Rather, the precip filled in to our west and filled in from east to west as the bubble moved west, not east.

Hmmmmm...............

As soon as the SFC temps rise above freezing------end of story-----no more ice issues here and things go back to normal. Where the roads have been treated, its cool, but where they have NOT been treated, you are taking your life into your own hands if you attempt to drive tonight with all the ice out there. Walking is foolish too. One slip and you can easily break an arm or leg or wrist.

That freezing rain keeps piling on the ice...................................

Stay tuned to the Jebcast Weatherplex!!!! We'll keep ya updated..........

1230am Jan 18 here at the Jebcast Weatherplex.....................

We have an ice problem here in N VA folks.

Temperature is bouncing back and forth between 29 and 30 degrees; dewpoint is 28 degrees. Freezing rain is ongoing. The roads and sidewalks are icy; there is a sixteenth of an inch of ice on many objects out there. Walking on that crap is chancy at best, I almost slipped checking up on it.

We could easily pick up a quarter-inch of ice overnight.

Temps are running 29/30 with DP at 28, winds are light south, pressure is 29.86 and falling fast. Lots of freezing rain yet to go.

Stay tuned for updates...............................

115am.............................

Temperature is still 29 degrees, DP is 28 degrees. Pressure is down to 29.83 and falling rapidly, winds are SW at 6 mph.

We still have freezing rain piling more ice up.

It should be warming up above 32 degrees soon folks.

This is Jeb, reporting from Dale City/Woodbridge VA here at the Jebcast Weatherplex. This will be my last update tonight. Join us again later this morning. Yup I know I need to keep updating all night, but I haven't had the chance to hire a full-time staff lol.

Good night/morning everyone. Take care and be careful out there.

Here in Arlington, at 6 am Sunday the 18th it was raining, smushing down the accumulated sleet on my car and sidewalk to a quarter-inch.

I am about ready to save excitement about this winter's weather until February...

Another note from 34-degree Arlington VA:

Both the models and the NWS weatherguessers indicate that the temperatures will go back down below freezing after sunset in Northern VA. Take care in case VDOT or your local undepartment hasn't treated your road as "this is so minor".

Hey, Barnaby. Currently in Howard Co. it's 33* with rain...was freezeing rain a couple of minutes ago, but changed to plain rain. Yeah, this has been an intresting storm. I got much more ice then I expected...I'm guessing around 0.25".....( Isn't that warning criteria? ) I also got 1" of snow out of this...how much snow/ice did you get in WV?

1000am..................................

Rain and freezing rain.........................35 degrees, dewpoint 35 degrees. Can you say, Column saturated folks?

Wind NE at 5 mph, pressure 29.53 and falling.

Some of the ice has melted, some ice still on roads, the grass, my driveway, on my car................................

Hmm....................the NWS extended the ice advisory to 11am this morning..................It's a lot cooler than had been expected, only 35 degrees this morning so far. I think this could end as snow..............lows tonight will fall to 17 degrees, then tomorrow, 32 for a high.....13 for a low, HELLO, ARCTIC FRONT!!!

Stay tuned to the Jebcast Weatherplex for more updates................

Yeah, a quarter inch is the threshold for a warning. (and/or 5" of snow)

33 and rain here too. Its been a steady 33 since at 7am. Had a little sleet accumulation, but only a very light coating of snow (0.2").

It figures. As cold as it has been recently, when we finally do get some moisture, it warms up a degree or two to much.

330pm............................

Temp is 34 degrees, down from our high of 38 today, NOW we have north winds of 12 to 26 mph. Pressure is 29.44 and rising. The temps are falling folks, but this radar shows the unpleasant reality: When it was warm enough for plain rain, we received hours of rain. Now the temps are getting nearly cold enough for snow..........and the moisture is running out.

That folks.............Is the story of our entire winter here in VA. It's been super-cold and dry, but the storm tracks have been all wrong, or they go north, or too far south, or the storms phase really well, only they phase OUT TO SEA.

It's been a really tough winter for us, missing the snow again and again and again and again and again. It'll be tough again near the 24th thru the 28th too. Certainly the ice was fun to watch, and I am thankful for it, but I've seen enough winters here in N VA. I know this pattern all too well. We will see this all winter. No doubt about it.

The one thing I have noticed, is that Pennsylvania and New Jersey have been getting many of the snows this season. Each winter, there are usually places that tend to get hit by the snow. Some winters, the places that tend to get hit are different. Of course the upper Northeast and the Great Lakes always get the snow.

But THIS season, I have noticed something, and it is becoming more and more and more and more evident with each passing snowstorm:

This winter belongs to Pennsylvania and New Jersey and southern New York . No doubt about it. You live in those places, you are gonna get nailed by nearly every storm. Clippers have nailed the Penn/N.J. region because this winter, they track such that the heavy snows plaster Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Many snow storms this winter tend to track north; that is this winter's trend. Every winter has a trend, and this winter's is the Legendary 2004 North Track.

You live in PA or NJ or NY, you had better forget shoveling; you won't have enough time to keep up with all the snow you are going to get there this winter. Old Man Winter has a BIG bone to pick with the PA/NJ/NY region. You'd best buy the best snowblower you can buy, because you are going to need it through early April.

All you have to do is look at snowpack. Outside of the Upper Northeast, the Great Lakes and the West, Who in the East has the most snowpack?

This is a no-brainer: Pennsylvania and New Jersey and probably Long Island too. Maybe some of N West Virginia too.

We have another Clipper Thursday. Come on folks, this is an easy one. Even a child could get it right. The Clipper will track to the north of most model tracks.

1) Pennsylvania and New Jersey will get nailed by 3 to 9 inches of snow (Look out 1evans, you could get another 6 inches), or;

2) The Clipper will track NORTH and slam New England with 5 to 10 inches of powdery snow.

If that Clipper slows down, increase the snow amounts by 10 inches.

I will wager you that that Clipper will NOT even give the MA one solitary flurry, not even one small tiny graupel-like flake of snow.

This winter is NOT the MA's season for Clippers. The pattern just does NOT favor it. Clippers don't get suppressed much lol, at least not THIS winter.

It'll be cold for sure, this IS a cold winter for us here in the MA, it's just that the pattern we have this winter means we get cold, then the storms track in such a way that we have a lot of WAA clear down to ground-level and it warms up and we either get straight plain rain or we get light snow then quick change to mix than rain, or we get plain slop, or a mix then quick change to rain. No snow accumulation expected.

All MA citizens and their guests will receive a free seasonal pass on our new, state-of-the-art train line, our pride and joy, the brand-new Red/Green Line. This is a new maglev train and it runs day and night. It boasts a perfect record so far: No derailments, and it has have never been late. It swiftly delivers passengers to their destinations. The destinations are varied: Some passengers arrive in a snowy winter wonderland, others end up in a muddy rain-soaked wasteland, where huge mosquitoes rule in the summer. Still other passengers arrive in a world-class swamp of slop.......sleet, snow and slush all slushed up by boatloads of rainfall. There is no fare; it is a free ride. On occasion, there are special free passes made available to the folks who live up in the exotic Northeastern Corridor. Hey, we're not stingy; we offer our free services to all. There is only one rule here:

If there is a winter storm in the East and you happen to live in the MA or you are the guest of someone that lives in the MA, you must board the Red/Green Line and enjoy our free service. :) Hey if you need to get somewhere, why not save the taxi fare or save the wear and tear on your own car and just leave the driving to us? We offer complimentary drinks, including alcohol and hard liquor, and we have a wide variety of meals you can choose from lol.

Yeah that's just another typical day here in the Mid Atlantic.

See ya again on Jan 24 thru 28. We'll be here, and we look forward to having you aboard again!!!! LOL !! :)
