Alberta Clipper Sends Snow Southward

A storm system that will sweep south and eastward across the Upper Midwest today and into the mid-Atlantic tonight will bring with it a swath of snow. These types of storms are often called Alberta Clippers because of their origin (Alberta, Canada) and speed (the clipper ship was a sailing vessel noted for its speed and maneuverability). This Alberta Clipper storm system will streak snow across Minnesota, Wisconsin, northern Illinois, lower Michigan, northern Indiana, northern Ohio into northern West Virginia, western Maryland, western Pennsylvania and western upstate New York today. Snowfall amounts will generally be 1-3 inches across these areas. The storm will then push snow across southeastern Pennsylvania, eastern Maryland, Delaware, southern New Jersey, northern Virginia and southeastern West Virginia tonight. Snowfall amounts will be on the order of 1-3 inches tonight.

In the West, another storm system moving across the northwest United States will continue to spread snow throughout the mountains and across the interior of the region today and tonight. In the Cascades of Washington and Oregon, the snow will accumulate 6-12 inches. Snow across eastern Washington into northeastern Oregon will accumulate at least 1-3 inches with up to 6 inches in northeastern Washington. Freezing rain will fall in the valleys of central Oregon and central Washington, making roads icy and hazardous. Snow across northern Idaho and northwestern Montana will accumulate at least 3-6 inches with up to a foot near the Canadian border. Snow will spread out from western Montana to northeastern Montana and accumulate 1-3 inches.
