Very small flakes are falling, but I can see some snowflakes over a quarter-inch in diameter beginning to mix with the smaller flakes. It's nice to see snow again in N VA!!!! :)

Temperature is 16 degrees, dewpoint is up to 8 degrees, and the winds are east at 8 mph. Light snow is falling and has been falling for about 15 minutes here. All surfaces are white and the snow is accumulating. NWS is calling for 4 to 8 inches. Of course I am hoping for 8, maybe a 9-inch lollipop, but the harsh reality of that darn dry slot looms large on the map. It's so bad, I refuse to show the radar. Next to the Rain/Snow line, the Dry Slot can cut a snowfall short faster than you can say, 'We got screwed.'

We will just have to hope and pray that thing fills back in or it moves away and we get good heavy snow all night.

EDIT!!!! Dewpoint is now up to 10 degrees!!!!!!!!!

I'll keep ya updated here at a very chilly Jebcast Weatherplex!!!

Still Virga here in Western Howard County MD, with a humidity of 58%...the humidity has risen 3% in the last 3 minutes, so we should start to see the snow fall within the next 15-30 minutes...

720pm...........................................

It is now 15 degrees here at the Jebcast Weatherplex, with a dewpoint of 13 degrees. That's 91% humidity. Winds are light out of the east.

The temp and dewpoint are now very close together. I think we may fall to 14 degrees eventually, with a 14-degree dewpoint. It could even get down to a 13/13 T/D spread later on.

The snow is light to moderate. Lowpressure down in Fredericksburg said the snow down there is moderate and getting heavier, so that is likely the trend for the next few hours here. Snow depth is nearly a half-inch.

This snow is falling at a surface temperature of 15 degrees.

The snow is very light and fluffy. It is powdery, and when folks drive by in their car, the snow blows off the back of their car and along the road. If you turn on your porch light and watch this snow come down, it becomes evident that the snow has a very high reflectivity index. Light glints off the flakes as they fall. This is very typical of dry snow. This snow does not have the same water content that snow falling near 32 degrees has. This is a cold, dry snow. The flakes are fine. Most of the time, heavy dry snow falls thickly but not with real big flakes like the wet snow can do near 32 degrees.

Everything outdoors is covered with snow. The snow has accumulated to a quarter to half inch deep. This is a steady snow, and larger flakes keep trying to mix in, as though the snow is trying to become heavier. I'd say we're on track for about 5 or 6 inches, but we'll have to watch this, because that darn dry slot could get involved. If that happens then the totals will be very shallow indeed.

It looks like we will enjoy a pretty good storm tonight. The snow is being driven by an east wind and may begin to do some slight drifting as the night wears on because the east winds, though light, are steady, and the snow is very dry, light and fluffy.

Chilly conditions will persist tonight.

I will continue to keep everyone updated here at the Jebcast Weatherplex in Dale City/Woodbridge, VA through the evening.

Jeb,

At 7:25 pm, there was no signs of snow at Arlington VA. However, by 7:50 pm the first almost invisible snow was falling, more sound than sight, about a quarter-flurry so far atop a black truck.

It's about 20 degrees here right now (warming up??).

820pm.....................................

Temperature is 14 degrees, dewpoint is 14 degrees.

The snow is getting heavier. Bigger flakes a third of an inch across are mixing in with all the smaller snow that's falling. It's really fun to watch. We have three-quarters of an inch on the ground now. The snow rate appears to be picking up. This snow sparkles a lot from light being reflected off the fallen snow. It's like somebody threw a bunch of miniature diamonds all over the lawn then I look at it and I see all these sparkles. WOW, dry snow is really interesting!!! :) :) :)

Winds are light from the ESE.

I will keep you updated tonight.

It should be starting there pretty soon.......the column is getting moist so the snow can reach the ground. :)

WOW!! WOW!! WOW!!

WOW is the operative word here folks!!!!! Moderate snow is falling, probably verging on heavy!!! Some of those snowflakes are a half-inch wide!!!! We have an inch of snow. Man that snow is coming down!!!!!

Temps 14 degrees, dewpoint is also 14 degrees. Winds are light variable. It is really getting wonderful to look outside!! The streetlights are getting reflected between the snow which is beginning to cover the grass and to look all nice and white, and the low cloud deck and all the falling snow!!!!! It looks really lighter out there with all the snow on the ground!!!!

I will keep y'all updated!!!! This storm is getting interesting!!!! Hardly anyone is driving now.

Another note from Arlington VA:

The 840 pm driveway report:

The car that was driven into it at 7:25 pm (not just for a spin to the corner) is itself now coated, and other vehicles that did not move now appear to be sporting a good quarter-inch to half-inch of snow as a decent burst is now moving through.

About time to head on out so that I can come back bright and early tomorrow...

Snow has gone lighter for now. We have about 1.5 inches on the ground. The lawn is looking really good, all white. I am thinking we might get 3 to 5 inches if we get some heavier areas of snow tonight.
