Wow, didn't think Mary would be #1 but it is! I knew it would be in the top 5 or 10, but #1?!!! Even after all this time....when I was in school, mainly high school, there were so many Mary's, it was crazy! About 20 girls turned around if you heard - MARY! There were Mary Ann's (my full name is Mary Anne, shhhh!), Mary Jane's, Mary Sue's, and on and on.

As some of you know my husband's name is Jim, another common boy name back then. So when we had children, I decided I didn't want common names for them. Not unusual names mind you, just not like Mary or Jim! We did fine with Nina, but for Laura's name, we honestly thought she'd encounter many Lauren's. She has but it seems Laura is a fairly common name too! She's always been one of two Laura's thru-out her school years. Guess that's better than one of 20 or more Mary's!!!!

Quick edit - Jim is #1 for boys. Wow, we're a number 1 couple!!!! :-)

petal*pusher wrote:Pretty interesting! I'm quite surprised, though, that what we think of as more "traditionally old-fashioned" names are very HIGH on this list! Do you suppose this means that a huge portion of our population are "seniors"??!!??

examples; Mary (1), Linda (3), Barbara (4), Margaret (9), Dorothy (10).....how many young "Dorothy's" do you know?, Betty (14), Helen (15), Ruth (19).....and so on

Names that SEEM popular now appear much lower!.........p

(oh yea.....I was Pamela (37) Meinke (20,685).....

Hey Petal - you calling me a senior? LOL J/K with ya.....I don't know many Dorothy's and that seems to be a name for my parent's generation. Just wait about 20 years, we'll see Katie, Nicole, Jessica, etc. up there.
