I have a question here................................

In Woodbridge it is now 11pm with 20 degrees.

Look at the following radar maps..................

National

and

Washington DC Regional

Now I know we can not have plain rain at 20 degrees. The ground is too cold anyway and we have over 4 inches of snow topped with a day's worth of steady freezing drizzle.

So folks........all the precip in those radars is moving NE.

So.........Are we in for some freezing rain and/or sleet and/or snow during the overnight?

Or......will the precip dry up or move away and not hit us or are we about to have a BIG warmup overnight?

Because from what I see on those radars, it appears that at the very least, parts of central and N VA will be shortly experiencing some freezing rain/sleet and possibly some snow.

So, What gives? Is it heading our way or not?

1110am................................................

It's 20 degrees in Woodbridge, VA

We also have freezing drizzle, which has accumulated three-sixteenths of an inch of ice on everything. It's VERY SLIPPERY!!!!

The very worst places that the freezing drizzle produces ice are sidewalks that have been cleared of snow. My neighbors were so eager to get out and shovel, and they did a really good job of cleaning the snow off their walks, only to suffer the freezing drizzle to pile up ice on the sidewalk. Man its a SHEET of ICE out there!!!

More freezing RAIN is expected this afternoon then snow 1 to 3 inches before ending later tonight.

Stay tuned, more updates coming...........................

340pm.................................

Freezing drizzle has coated everything with nearly a quarter-inch of ice.

Temps have risen to 23 degrees, up from an overnight low of 19.

Some light freezing rain is mixing in with the freezing drizzle. The main roads are okay, because VDOT has laid down a lot of salt and traffic does the rest.

The side streets are another matter entirely...........................

They are slippery and in places a sheet of ice. Some streets all you need is a plastic sled and you can slide along lol. The freezing drizzle has been falling since yesterday nonstop.

Forecast is for increasing heavier freezing rain then changeover to snow with 1 to 3 inches.

What a mess......................but you know me by now.................

I'm lovin' it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOOOOOO--HOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeb- just had a heavy period of sleet. Small balls looking like small hail covered everything quick. Luckily it only lasted about 3 minutes or so. There are these small marbles of ice verywhere now! It is so icy down here, we do not have the equipment down here you have near the metro. 25.9 degrees.

The NWS is calling for 1-3 inches of snow for areas east of the blue ridge...The only precip I see is leaving DC and MD...what are they looking at?

The area over WV I guess. Unless conditions are expected to be more conducive under current cloud cover. I was wondering the same.

6pm........................................

It's still 23 degrees with light winds.

The freezing rain has changed to sleet. Sleet balls are piling up everywhere.

The roads are terrible, and I do not want to even try to take a jebwalk on all that ice!!!

Shouldn't be long before it goes over to snow!!!

Okay folks, the sleet here is in the process of changing over to snow as I speak. Temps are still holding at 23 degrees.

Our roads are a sheet of ice, now rapidly becoming covered by snow.

If you decide to walk out there, please be very careful..............there is nothing as slippery as ice covered with snow.......and the ice will be very hard to spot with snow covering it.

Tomorrow's rush hour is gonna be a DOOZY in the District and in N VA as temps are not going to warm much until about 11am. Tomorrow it will be WINDY with gusts over 40mph. Watch out for a little blowing snow.

Friday another clipper may track thru S VA and we may get still more snow!!!!!

We had a very quick light dusting of snow that has since stopped. That appears to be it for us in Fredericksburg this time. Maybe again Friday. Enjoy your snowfall in D.C. and points north.

Yep we might get some Friday and again Sunday.

Temps are not too bad for us the next few days; we'll have sun and highs ranging from 31 to 41 with overnight lows in the teens and 20s. The quarter-inch ice layer will help, but we may still see the ambient snowpack melt over the next few days, especially on south-facing exposures.

Last night, I enjoyed my first snow jebwalk of the 2003-2004 Winter Season.

I conducted a snow jebwalk around the outer rim of Potomac Mills Mall here in Woodbridge. I saw plowed piles of snow up to 11 feet tall and 60 feet wide. Walking in 4 inches of snow is very different from walking on dry pavement. The jebwalk took longer than usual, but it was so fun!!! The weather was freezing drizzle and temps in the upper teens. There were areas of ice that I delightedly slid on!!!! There are many plowed piles of snow at the Mall and all over the area!!!! That was one of the very best jebwalks I have ever experienced!! I blasted my music on my CD headphones!!! Those Nickel-Metal-Hydride batteries work very well in 19-degree conditions!!! That snow is so fun to walk in and even better to look at!!!

It is SO GREAT to have snow on the ground!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOW, if only we can keep from warming up too much!!!

Because, for the very first time this winter, N VA has surface albedo considerations!!!!! NOW the NWS has to drop down a few degrees from guidance because of SNOWPACK!!!!!!! Plus, Snow begets Snow!!!!!! (I hope!!!)

Now our highs and lows will be LOWER because of high surface albedo!!!!

:jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:
:jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:
:jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:
:jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:
:jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:

Maybe the high surface albedo will help us keep our snow cover here!! This is why I want 36 inches so bad!!! The ice layer should help us some! The ground beneath was already very cold and had been frozen for over a week!!!

I saw people walking ON frozen bodies of water today!!! The one near Safeway, they had a shopping cart on the ice LOL LOL!!!

Hopefully the clipper on Friday will track more south and the southern system will get together with it and we'll get some good accumulating snows on Friday!!!

I really have LOVED this CAD situation!!!! Highs in the low 20s and teens are SO SHWEET!!!!! I love pulling in a deep breath of cool fresh arctic air every morning!!!!

That ice layer on top of the snow looks so nice!!!! I wish it would NEVER melt!!!!

EDIT 103pm Jan 28 2004:
This morning I discovered that we got a half-inch of ice on top of 4.5 inches of snow, and another half-inch of snow on top of the ice last night!!! So in effect, N VA got 5 inches plus a half-inch of ice from the freezing drizzle and freezing rain. Not too shabby at all!!!

-JEB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU, GREENLAND BLOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
