All that vertical motion has allowed the snow to blast through the warm mid-layer above you  Enjoy!!!

Have heard thundersnow a few times: 1978 February blizzard in South Jersey, the 1993 March superstorm in Edison, NJ and the January 6, 1996 blizzard here in Metuchen. None tonight, but it was impressive to leave work at 6:00 pm in Rahway (Union Cty), where it had just changed from very light ZR to very light IP, and to hit the proverbial "wall" about 1 mile from my house in Metuchen (~9 miles S or Rahway) - all of a sudden I was in a blinding sleetstorm on Rt 287. Heavy sleet fell for about an hour, giving us about 1/2" of sleet. Since then, we've had fairly light sleet with some snow starting to mix in as of about 8:15. I hope the snow's about to get here, since it is snowing in Newark, about 20 miles north of here and in Somerville about 10 miles west of here - plus I got to see Jim Cantore's report from Manhattan at 7:30 pm and it had just started snowing heavily there. If the sleet hangs on for too much longer, I'm afraid we won't get the 6" I was hoping for.

A few weeks ago, I heard a loud clap of
thunder, and, about three minutes later,
sleet started pelting down. It didn't last but
about a minute or so, but, I thought...well,
that's STILL not as good as thundersnow
(which I've never experienced!)!

It was. I love driving, in general, and I really love driving in a good snowstorm or even a good thunderstorm.

Started snowing heavily here around 8:45 and we have about 1" of snow on top of our 1/2" of sleet, which is on top of about 1/8" of ice. Should be an interesting night.
