#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Fri Jan 30, 2004 1:01 pm

The following is a public information statement from the NWS office in Buffalo, NY. Note that 63 inch snow in Parish, NY right on I 81 north of Syracuse. That much snow no doubt will cause problems. There was 6-8 inches per hour at times in Parish, NY. The PIS is below.

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT...OSWEGO COUNTY SNOW
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BUFFALO NY
930 AM EST FRI JAN 30 2004

...INCREDIBLE SNOW BLITZ CONTINUES OVER OSWEGO COUNTY...

A FLOW OF COLD ARCTIC AIR MOVING OVER THE UNFROZEN WATERS OF LAKE
ONTARIO CONTINUES TO PRODUCE A NARROW BAND OF INTENSE SNOW THIS
MORNING. THE WIND TRAJECTORY HAS REMAINED NEARLY STATIONARY FOR 36
HOURS NOW...SO THE LAKE SNOW PLUME HAS ONLY MOVED SLIGHTLY DURING
THIS PERIOD...AND WITH RATES OF 3 TO 4 INCHES PER HOUR WITHIN
IT...SECTIONS OF OSWEGO COUNTY HAVE BEEN SMOTHERED WITH AS MUCH AS
FIVE FEET OF SNOW SINCE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON!

THIS FOLLOWS ON THE HEELS OF TWO OTHER LAKE EFFECT "EVENTS" DURING
THE PAST TEN DAYS. ONE ON JANUARY 17-20 DROPPED UP TO 20 INCHES
ACROSS THE SOUTHERN AND EASTERN SECTIONS OF THE COUNTY...WHILE THE
MORE RECENT EVENT OF JANUARY 22-24 DROPPED UP TO THREE FEET OVER
CENTRAL AND WESTERN SECTIONS OF THE COUNTY.

OSWEGO COUNTY IS PRONE TO HEAVY LAKE SNOWS OFF ONTARIO...BUT THE
AMOUNTS OF THE PAST WEEK TO TEN DAYS HAVE BEEN ASTOUNDING.

A FEW SPECIFIC REPORTS...

FROM THE CURRENT EVENT (WED AFTERNOON THRU THIS MORNING)...
.PARISH...... 63 INCHES
.WEST MONROE. 50 INCHES
.CONSTANTIA... 45 INCHES
.OSWEGO....... 32 INCHES
.FULTON....... 26 INCHES

AND FROM THE JANUARY 22-24 EVENT...
.HANNIBAL..... 36 INCHES
.FULTON....... 33 INCHES
.W. MONROE.... 29 INCHES
.MINETTO...... 26 INCHES
.OSWEGO....... 12 INCHES

MUCH OF THE COUNTY HAS RECEIVED OVER 100 INCHES FOR THE MONTH...OVER
DOUBLE THE NORMAL.

THE SNOWBAND HAS DRIFTED NORTH THIS MORNING AND MAY GIVE SOME OF
THESE AREAS A BREAK...BUT SHOULD SHIFT SOUTH AGAIN LATER TODAY AND
TONIGHT.
