This scares me!

Well, I will say that my 19 year old is an "A" student in college but when I get emails from him, they are all in lower case and many abbreviations. I think it is b/c he is in a hurry and knows that I am the one reading it. Alot of these habits come from instant messaging. There is a whole new language there and I don't think it reflects on their intellect. It looks stupid to us because we can't read it But my 13 year old can have some very intelligent conversations on AIM and use a language that I cannot decipher and absolutley no punctuation, but he also makes "A"'s in English...........go figure.

Indeed, just about every single person I chat with on IM never uses proper capitalization or punctuation and it is obvious that they aren't all unitelligent and/or their keyboard isn't in the best shape.

For the most part I capitalize the first letter of all sentences in IM conversations. In the last several days I haven't as much beings that most aren't; but even then I have been so used to it after the last five years online.

Tim and petal pusher, ya'll have given great insight into our educational system. You reaffirm my decision to homeschool. Each child does need different challenges to make school click with them. I have a son who has been held back in two different grades. He couldn't read. He was moved to too many different schools for him to grasp alot of the education being taught him. My other child was always A honor roll. When I took on homeschooling the kids, they were 2 years apart in age and in tbe same grade, but that didn't mean that the exact same cirriculum was going to reach both children on a equal level. I had to individualize their work, to fit each child. In 1 year, I took a child who could not read fluently, to a child who can now pick up anything, and read it with CONFIDENCE! He has just tested this week, to see if he qualify's for catching up on one of the grades he was behind in. My other child, has always NEEDED to be greatly challenged, and we've taught her differently, and she's still a success. Tim, it's really sad when you have the desire to teach children on their specific levels, and the administration holds you back. Frankly, that bites. Your hands are tied, and you know the children aren't getting what they could, for an entire year. What a shame! Thanks for sharing your insight with us!
