Snow and Ice Creeps Northeastward

A storm system rising out of the southern Plains Monday will swirl snow and ice across the Midwest into the Southeast then up through the mid-Atlantic into the Northeast during the next 24 hours.

Snow across northern lower Michigan, upper Michigan, eastern Minnesota, northern and western Wisconsin, northern and western Iowa into southeastern South Dakota, eastern Nebraska, eastern Kansas, western Missouri Monday into Monday night will accumulate 1-3 inches with up to six inches of snow across western upper Michigan, northwestern Wisconsin into southeastern Minnesota.

A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain will be found across southeastern Wisconsin, northern Illinois southeastern Iowa and northeastern Missouri Monday that will end as a period of all snow Monday night. Meanwhile, sleet and freezing rain across northeastern Georgia, western South Carolina, northeastern Tennessee, eastern Kentucky, southwestern Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana, southern and western Ohio Monday will last about three to six hours before changing to plain rain. Roads will become icy and hazardous for a time. Be prepared for slower traffic and treacherous roads, especially Monday morning and early Monday afternoon.

This wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain will spread across southern lower Michigan, northwestern Virginia, western and central Maryland, southern and western Pennsylvania, northeastern Ohio into southwestern New York Monday night. Again, the icing will last anywhere from three to six hours in many spots before changing to rain, but the ice may persist throughout the night into Tuesday morning in the mountains of West Virginia and western Virginia, western Maryland into southeastern and central Pennsylvania, southwestern New York and across southern lower Michigan.

In the West, another storm system rolling down the West Coast will spread rain and mountain snow across California today. Snow in the mountains of northern California Monday will accumulate another 3-6 inches. Snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California Monday and Monday night will accumulate at least 6-12 inches with 1-3 feet of snow above 7,000 feet. Snow will spread into the mountains of Southern California Monday afternoon and continue through Monday night and accumulate 6-12 inches by Tuesday morning. Snow will spread from southern Oregon and northwestern Nevada across southern Idaho, northeastern Nevada into Utah Monday and then across southwestern Montana, western Wyoming and northern Arizona Monday night. The snow will accumulate 1-3 inches, making the primary roads snow covered and icy in spots. Meanwhile, snow showers in the Cascades of Washington and Oregon Monday into Monday night will accumulate 1-3 inches.
