Texas 'O Texas....where the heck is winter? Maybe over here?

#1 Postby Johnny » Tue Feb 03, 2004 4:09 pm

This just out from the NWS...........On forward you stubborn Arctic Air!!!!!!

HOWEVER SHOULD
NOTE THE MED RANGE MODELS ARE INDICATING SIGNIFICANT RIDGING UPR THE
WEST COAST INTO FAR WRN CANADA WITH DEEP TROUGHINESS ACROSS MIDDLE
SECTION OF THE COUNTRY THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK...THEN SLOWLY
SHIFTING EAST. THIS WILL PRODUCE A NORTH TO SOUTH ORIENTED JET FROM
WELL INTO WRN CANADA EXTENDING SOUTH TO NRN TX BY MID WEEK. THIS IS A
VERY FAVORABLE SCENARIO FOR DRIVING VERY COLD CANADIAN AIR SOUTH
INTO THE NRN AND CEN PLAINS AND EVENTUALLY TX. IF THE SNOW PACK
HOLDS IN THE CEN AND NRN PLAINS...IT COULD MAKES THINGS EVEN MORE
INTERESTING. WINTER MAY HAVE SAVED IT'S BEST FOR FEBRUARY THIS
YEAR
...SO STAY TUNED.

Yet another opportunity for us all to get our hopes up lol. I will hold on to a little hope as I know it can still get bitterly cold down here in Feb. and it's also the month with the best chance of SNEAUX.

Our best chance of snow is in February so I'm still hoping it'll happen. Besides, a lot of people have promised me snow, so I'm sure it'll come! :)

Also Brein check out the videos on KATC.com, they interview some guy from the NWS office and he says we will have a cold Feb. and also have chances of snow.

February looks to be the south's turn for some wintry weather. Just how far south is the question, I-10, I-20. Instead of a tight cold core of air, the cold air has now spread. With the snow pack developing up north and a very active southern jet, It just a matter of time of when the cold air and southern jet meet and where it will snow.

Here in Baton Rouge, most of our measurable snows have occurred in February. In my 42 years, I can recall about 5 of them. All five of these were surprises, never forecasted. The models have an easy time of predicting snow 10-15 days in advance ala the goufas (gfs). But since we are down south, its not really supposed to happen so the models don't pick it up.

I can even recall measurable snow for two days around March 19 in 1968.

Its been many years since we have had fronts stalling in the gulf with low pressure developing and copious amounts of rain. You get used to the drought with warmer temps and fewer rainy days.

Weather is always full of extremes and exceptions. Let's hope it will be here as well in the south.

Here's to the models never predicting snow and someone getting surprised.

I can remember the surprise snow of 1997

That was a fun morning :) So, yes, those types of things can sneak up on you.

Valkhorn I remember waking up to flurries here in Lafayette that morning, and they weren't forecasted at all. Jackson and surrounding areas got hammered though.
