But the question is, was she cussing?
I say no. She referred to hell, the place. It wasn't an exclamation like "Hell no!" or "Hell! I just stapled my finger!" It was used in the Biblical sense of the word. It's a word that she could just as easily pick up in church. And she was defending God with its usage by telling her classmate that he shouldn't say, "I swear to God."

Zero tolerance -- okay. But to suspend a SECOND grader??? She's 7 years old, for Pete's sake. Reprimand her...tell her not to say that in school. Call the parents and ask them to talk with her about where to use it. But suspension? That's just too much.
If it was her third or fourth offense, maybe.

When my son submitted an exhibit about WWII, he included an anti-Nazi ditty that every GI would have recognized...but since it used the word "ball" (in the context you're all familiar with), the teacher sent him to the principal, who called me...and I LAUGHED!!!!!
I asked this man what his specialty degree was, and he stated "Ph.D, History"...yet he was TOTALLY unaware of the many derogatory, "patriotic" songs served up to Rosies and GIs during that period. I learned this one, and many others, from my USAAF father, and all of us as kids would sing them in the car while on a long vacation drive.
coppertop was excused AFTER I informed the principal of the significance thereof...but this goes to the state of "what are they teaching teachers?"
PS: If you want the lyrics, E-mail me...LOLOLOL
