Last October I went to OBX with my Christian Singles group for three days and I got very, very caught up in jebwalks there in 77-degree, 64-degree dewpoint conditions. It took me three months to get over it, back in early December 2003 I did not even want winter because the OBX jebwalks had gotten SUCH A SEVERE hold of me!!! LOL!! I can STILL remember that like it was yesterday.

There is nothing quite like a 77/64 T/Td spread jebwalk on that beach!!!! :)

I am not feeling allright because of the Florida tragedy.

I want winter and snow but unfortunately I must face up to the stark fact that pac storms will mess with phasing this winter and that I live way too far south for the kinds of snow I like and for the kinds of extreme deep cold that I crave. It is likely that I will never get to move to such a place.

At least though, I also like places like Nags Head, North Carolina in the summer so life should be cool for me. :)

jeb --- what if i told you that you would get a major snow event either the first or second week of MAR, would it make you feel better.

and BTW, yes the events which took place here in florida are very traggic. but on the other hand we cant control what a few individuals do others. all we can do is hope that justice is served.

We need a storm that will rival 1888! 46 inches in Albany NY! 4 feet in Troy...... That would be amazing..........

Or just a March Blizzard that will top 1996 snow totals ( However, I doubt that) 27 inches here from 1996 blizzard..... Would love to see 27.5 inches........ :D

For those of you who think winter is over in the midwest and east....better read what the preliminary extended forecast discussion is saying this morning. For the west coast winter is pretty much winding down but not in the east. They are talking about a STRONG arctic front moving into the Ohio Valley and eastern US later in the week. With a mega ridge on the west coast staying put and a positive PNA pattern(again for the umpteenth time this winter) winter back east isn't going anywhere soon.

Maybe later in March or April spring will appear but from what I am reading you folks back east have a ways to go before "spring" really arrives and stays!

Maybe Punxtawny Phil is right afterall - 6 more weeks of winter!

I really think that by now you can tell how early or late the winter will end. I remember we've had mild winters in the past and rather snowless ones for that matter and Spring came knocking on the door by March. This year, I don't think it'll be that way.

From what I can tell, except for December this winter has been ALL Positive PNA which tends to keep the midwest and east pretty much locked into winter. I am amazed at how many winters year after year after year seem to have a positive PNA pattern. I live in Seattle and that usually means a very strong ridge on the coast over us for 1-2 sometimes longer. I am showing my age here....but when I was a kid growing up here we could count on lowland snow at LEAST once ever 4 years on a regular basis. Not anymore. Now is the ridge which seems to rear its ugly head more often than not in the winter. I am grateful however we HAVE had plenty of precip and fairly low snow levels so the snowpack in the mountains means we will have enough water for next summer. I suppose this is just a normal thing for the PNA to be positive but I would love to see a long stretch of negative PNA from Nov-Feb. I guess I just live in the wrong part of the country.
For those of you that enjoy the cold temps and snow....I wish you a winter which lasts until the end of March. For those you you who don't...it IS February and spring will eventually return.
Our daffodils are already up and should be blooming in the next 2 weeks. So since the positive PNA pattern will prevail...all I can say is bring on spring!!

Alex - I know that you guys out there have had "drought like" conditions for your area and you've had alot to be concerned about with water supply. I'm glad that it seems at the very least that the mountains do have a good snow pack.

Welcome to Storm2k, Kelly ... and exactly, the PNA actually tanked (definite RNA pattern for about a month) and with it brought some very warm temperatures at the beginning of January with a very deep Western Trough which also featured quite a winter storm for the WA and OR coastal regions ...

Alex,

Time out.

Arctic outbreak? Large ern winter storm?

I thought Winter 2003-04 was pronounced dead...yet again. ;)

Per an earlier discussion on the topic, it seems that roughly 7-14 days after winter is declared dead, it roars back to life. Maybe, I'll have to start using this contrarian index in the December-March timeframe to help predict major winter weather events. ;)

And the ONLY reason that is wasn't even WARMER in the East was the fact the NAO has been primarily NEG throughout this winter, except for near neutral NAO conditions during the heart of the RNA pattern ... during the transition back to a PNA/-NAO pattern, several Cold air damming scenarios unfolded, including the severe icestorm with hit the Carolinas just a couple of weeks back ...

Image

During the middle/latter part of January, the storm track was very suppressed due to a severely displaced PV which poured all kinds of arctic air into the Northern Plains/Northeast.
