Remembering Presidents Day 2003

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Mon Feb 16, 2004 12:08 am

Two websites of presidents day '03 are below. There was even a picture or two of me in the knee deep snow. I'm over 6 feet tall too and a 22.5" snow fell in Essex, Maryland. There was a thriving sleetstorm on the night of February 16th. But when that occurred, the damage was already done with 21.5" of snow on the ground. 1" of sleet fell on the night of February 16th , then another inch of snow fell on top of that the next day. Thus 22.5" total snow accumulation. It was February 17th, 2003 when half of the roof of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad in Baltimore collapsed due to the weight of the snow. Half of the locomotives there were destroyed.

These are the photos of presidents day '03 from central Maryland.

This was a record setting snow for Baltimore with 28.2" of snow total during a 3 day period. There wasn't much wind with this. That means this was considered to be a snowstorm as opposed to a blizzard. A blizzard is defined when there is sustained winds of 35 mph or greater in a 3 hour period. Winds were only sustained at 10-20 mph during Presidents Day '03 in Baltimore. The snowfall itself was very long in duration with some brief respites in between. but this was all associated with the same storm system, just longer lasting. The long duration of this snow is what made this storm so bad when combined with very cold arctic air. However at some point, 2-3 inches an hour fell and there was some lightning and thunder reported also on the morning of february 16th along western shore of chesapeake bay. I seen it all and it was amazing!!!

By the way another record to talk about, Boston, Mass, 27.5" of snow in a 24 hour period the day after Baltimore got slammed.

Awesome shots, Jim. I created a page covering the event for the DC/Baltimore area as well, including the zone forecasts, warnings, PNS, AFD's, etc. that I saved from the event.

Yep last year was really sweet, but it does not happen every year.

Amazing how much can change in a year.

Well I am totting up my gardening costs and trying to figure out where in the back yard I want to put the garden!! Man I can't wait for those easter lilies near Easter!!!

Spring in the Mid Atlantic is a many-splendored thing, and unlike snow here in the Mid Atlantic, for spring to arrive it does not require a lot of different things to come together just so in order for us to enjoy it.

Spring just happens, the birds sing, the flowers bloom and the fun gardening work starts! :) I LOVE cutting lawns!!!

Man Spring is SUCH an EXCITING time of year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The highly REALISTIC Easter play at church!!!!

All the nice Easter lilies I get to bring home and plant in my backyard!!!!!!

All my jebwalks begin to remind me of the OBX as the Temperature/Dewpoint Spreads rise!!!

Oh the Severe Weather enthusiasm on all the weather boards!!!!!!

I can't wait to check out all the storm chasing web sites again!!!!!

YEAH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SPRING 2004 IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER for the Mid Atlantic!!!!!

Snow will continue for the Northeast through May, but folks, The Mid Atlantic is ready to ROLL with the new Spring!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Awesome page. I got numerous radars from intellicast of this entire storm in progress from February 14th-18th, 2003. I was up none stop during this one!!!

I'll admit, I never stayed up as long none stop as I did during Presidents Day 2003. We're talking 2-3 days straight without rest covering this storm. That's how incredible it was!!

Yes we got thunder and lightning along the western shore of the bay in se Baltimore County. Glen Burnie saw some lightning in AA County also. Thus the higher totals down there at BWI. We had a bit more sleet mix in here in southeast Baltimore on the night of February 16th. Still 22.5" near the bay is very impressive. We approached 3 inches an hour on the morning of February 16th, 2003. Between 7 and 8 am, 3" per hour fell and there was lightning and thunder on a few occasions too. I was out in that stuff too and wow incredible stuff.

Jim,

It sure was an incredible storm worth loosing sleep over... I think the fact that I stayed up all night for the two nights leading up to the storm might have had something to do with why I came down w/ the flu Sunday evening ! I'll never, ever forgive myself for doing that and winding up being too sick to go outside and take pictures and enjoy the snow after it ended... but oh well. BTW, would it be possible for you to post some of the radar images? I'd love to add more stuff to that page I posted.

Sure Brett. Counting the # of radar images, 51 total for presidents day 2003. Question is how do you want them received? I was certainly up and on with this during this historic storm.

These pictures come from http://nycsubway.org
The site has pictures from other dates in the past but not Feb 83. I have a home video of it.
