Powerful Nor`Easter: State of Emergency in PEI & NS

#1 Postby BritBob » Thu Feb 19, 2004 1:49 pm

The respective provinces have declared a state of emergency, while they cope with this exceptional storm.

Extremely powerful winds are hammering the Maritimes, with many highways closed, businesses closed, airports closed. This has to be one of the better storms for the area in the last few years.

Here in Moncton, the winds are quite something, and going out walking is pretty awful with the winds pushing hard against you.

A storm surge is also predicted along the north shore tonight, and with sea ice packed along the coast this could be potentially a nightmare for homes there.

Looking out the window, there is horizontal snow, and white-out conditions. Pieces of roofing has been seen blowing about.

I took this snap earlier before conditions made photography hopeless. It`s very grey but I`m using my old camera.

I recommend looking at the latest GOES image, wow!

I`m actually sheltering behind a wall here...

Taken about an hour ago, from the front porch. Winds literally howling down the streets,...

Great photos, Bob!

I've been following this system as it lashes eastern Canada with ferocious winds and heavy snow. It's a really powerful storm and arguably among the most powerful this winter.

Hey Don, agree with that one. IT`s definately the better the major storms this winter here in Moncton. Not so much in the snow accumulations, but the winds are far more powerful. The two biggies we got back in December accumulated more snow. Then again, this storm isn`t over yet!

I have to congratulate the Canadian Global model, that has been in top form with this system for days. While the GFS and ETA moved it east, west and inside out, the Canadian kept bang on course.

Not that the GFS means anything this far out. IT is usually weak.

Bob,

The winds are extremely impressive. At 2 pm, I saw that they were sustained at 51 mph/44 kts in Moncton. The heaviest snow appears to be to your south with Halifax having reported heavy snow through much of the day. Winds have been lighter in Halifax.

It will be interesting to watch the progress of this storm and to get the accumulations. The Canadian Model did a superior job with its forecast up your way.

Good video of the blizzard. It's been called the worst snow storm in over 100 years, with more to come tonight in the way of storm surge. All of eastern New Brunswick under a storm surge warning.

That`s absolutely ludicrous reporting, saying it`s the worst in 100 yrs. God, I`d just love to know where they dream this crap up from.

Moncton, in 1992 I believe recorded over 160cms from a single storm, which is still the record. This storm is no where near that. Moncton has so far got 60cms -/+ 5cms for error. Total on the ground must be around 140cms.

Only the winds were exceptional here. Nova Scotia and PEI were hardest, with Halifax areas close to 100cms of snow.

Ps. Ooops, just noticed, welcome Medicinematt:)

Wow, what an impressive storm on that satellite image and loop.

Yikes, the storm you are referring to sure did bury that area.....

160 centimeters = 5.19 feet = 62.28 inches!
