More sad news for families:

AT&T to slash 4,600 jobs

No. 1 long-distance company says it would save about $400 million by cutting 8 percent of workforce.
February 25, 2004: 4:07 PM EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) - AT&T Corp. Wednesday told analysts it was planning to cut 8 percent of its workforce, or about 4,600 jobs, this year in a drive to cut costs.

The nation's largest long-distance company said the moves would save about $400 million this year, and leave it with about 57,000 employees.

AT&T (T: Research, Estimates) Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Thomas Horton said the company cut 18 percent of its workforce in 2003 and saved $800 million.

I would imagine that AT&T is losing market due to trends in communications. I just read an article about internet telephone, which has no long distance charges and is really taking off. Also, the cell phone companies are offering long distance. AT&T may go the way of the horse and buggy. I don't agree that anyone owes anyone a job. If we are to be productive citizens we need to produce something that has a demand! I got rid of our long distance service a long time ago. We keep in touch with family and friends by email, and in that rare instance when we need to make a long distance call, we buy prepaid phone cards.

How about the hit the payment and start looking. Hey...my wife was layed off 2 years ago and we are still trying to get on our feet. I've lost more hair and developed more ulcers in the last two years to last a lifetime! What we did not do is whine and cry. We made a plan and did what we had to do, including excepting jobs we did not really want, until we could find that better job. This is a tough world! We have Unemployment, Food Stamps, Job Training and Placement Act, and who knows what else to help the unfortunate get along until they find something else. Guess what, I found a new "decent paying" job and so did my wife.

I'm sorry, but we could live in Haiti!!

You can look all you want but if there are no jobs out there making decent money then you're in big trouble. Which is going to eventually lead to financial problems.
