6 hours of lightning and thunder and 18" of snow south of Charlotte, NC is the unofficial total relyed by storm spotters in the areas. 1-2 foot drifts are likely south of Charlotte along the NC/SC border tonight.
0.15 mile visibility with very heavy snow is falling in Greensboro, NC. Watch out for 2-4 inch per hour snowfall rates and thunderstorms in parts of west central North Carolina tonight.

You got to give DT credit because I think he was projecting 12-18" of snow in west central NC area. Excellent call indeed!!!
Quite a potent upper disturbance last night with convective snows!!! The coastal surface low has never strengthened much until now, well offshore. Some amazing totals below just from an upper level disturbance, but not unexpected.
Charlotte: 13" with thundersnow, 4th greatest snowstorm ever in Charlotte. 18" just south of the city with 6 hours of lightning and thunder last night.
High Point: 12"
Raleigh: 5"
Ashville: 5"
Asheboro: 12"
Boone: 11"

DT!!!! I think he projected over one foot in west central North Carolina and nailed it!!! I thought 12 inches or more would be more of an isolated occurrance, but it was a more widespread 12", especially under those heavy convective mesoscale bands. In DT's case, 12-18" was I believe his prediction. Either way, just amazing stuff and it was just an upper level disturbance that did most of the damage in west central North Carolina or part 2 if you will. The next problem with the warmup this weekend is significant melting snow and possible significant rises on streams, creeks, and possibly even rivers as well. Gotta keep an eye on that folks, especially in west central North Carolina!!! Enjoy the snow today, it will be a memory by Sunday if not sooner with the strong late February sun this time of year.

My sister's family and my mother both live in South Charlotte (about 5 miles from the SC border) and received 17" of snow! Simply amazing. They said it was just unreal during the storm, with thundersnow and drifting and complete whiteout conditions. First time my brother-in-law didn't go to work (he has a beer distribution job with Coors that requires him to be on the road) in the 10+ years they've lived there.
Can't complain, really, though, as we've had ~35" this winter in northern Middlesex County, NJ, which is a good 5-10" above normal, and we have some more winter left. Hopefully.
