I can't help but hurt for the people of Haiti. Within the last hour, CNN reported that residents who were not able to evacuate the city of Port au Prince and run for the hills are being randomly executed in this uprising.
It's so sad to know that other countries and islands are closing their borders to the citizenry of that nation. Most of the citizens are only looking to work and be able to support their families. They don't want to be a part of any political group but are being caught up in this horrible situation there.
I know that the United States, and Florida in particular, is strained by the costs of Cuban refugees and Mexican and Central American immigrants but somehow it just doesn't seem fair that we won't allow escaping Haitians to leave that country and come here - at least until the political situation over there has calmed down.
The Palm Beach Post has done a photo essay on the misery over there.
It tells such a sad story

This is a situation that won't get better until someone compromises.

It's hard to come to terms with our humanity...or is it in-humanity.
When we are born, our color, race, sex, ethnicity, and religion are so unimportant. We need love and care and tender time to rest and grow. And time to kick our feet and laugh. But we don't need those other things. They simply complicate us.
As we grow we forget those simpler times and instead get caught up in our differences. We recognize the strength of some; the weakness of others. And so, in our search for simplicity, happiness, joy, and meaning...we are introduced to pain and desparation and hopelessness....and acts of violence in the guise of something else.
It seems so wrong that our differences could force us to be so angry, to hate, and to hurt others. Innocents who seek simplicity instead become pawns of those who seek power as a way to add meaning to life. It won't.
Haiti is in pain this night. Those who incite the violence are in pain. So too are those who are victims.
Yet we have come to know that in the resilience of man...a humble new beginning will take place...and people now in pain will find the value of simplicity and family once again themselves.
I pray to ease their pain as well. There are few easy answers to the ways of life. Only assurance that out of the pain will sprout new hope.
May the bloodshed be minimal and those who would inflict the pain recognize the folly of the acts.
They fulfill nothing.
Amen to the wish and hope for help and peace.
