Sixpence None the Richer is fading into that milky twilight.
The Christian pop band, which burst onto the music scene in the late '90s with their light-as-a-feather hit "Kiss Me," is officially breaking up after a decade together.
Sixpence singer Leigh Nash and multi-instrumentalist Matt Slocum broke the news last week in a letter to fans published in CCM Magazine. The group's cofounders said the split was amicable. Having recently had a baby, Nash has indicated she plans to take more time for her family, while Slocum said he's interested in traveling and is considering going back to school.
Sixpence, whose name was inspired by a passage in a C.S. Lewis novel, got its start in the Christian music scene in Texas in the mid '90s.
After moving to Nashville, the sextet broke through to the mainstream and scored major success with "Kiss Me," a lilting pop lullaby off the band's self-titled album that reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts and was nominated for a Grammy.
Sixpence soon followed that up with a radio-friendly cover of the La's "There She Goes."
Despite the newfound fame, it would be a few years before Sixpence would release new material due to contractual issues with their old record label. But after signing with Reprise Records, Sixpence bounced back in 2002 with Divine Discontent, which included the singles "Breathe Your Name" and a cover of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over."
