Who Do You Call?

#1 Postby azskyman » Sat Mar 06, 2004 8:36 am

Ghost-Busters! When do you call? Anytime I want!

There is probably no technological advance in the last 10 years that has impacted our lifestyle more than the cell phone.

We must have been a very repressed society before then because these days it seems that everyone is talking to everyone and every conversation is just one that can not wait until we are home.

Seems like every other driver is talking to someone, and in stores, in lines at the bank, at sporting events...everyone is talking to someone about something important.

My question is this. Who do YOU call using your cell phone? Do you just stay in touch with friends? Do you call family at your lunch break? Long distance? Just what is it that you use your cell phone for the most?

For us, living in a large metropolitan area, it is a wonderful tool to have in case of emergency. That is STILL the primary reason we have them. And, with our sons in California and us in Arizona, we both live in the same region so we can call them as though we were calling someone across the street...and we do. Just to ask about something small or simple.

But the second biggest use is for long distance calls back to Illinois. We touch base with family members once or twice a week. With the pricing package we have, and about 700 minutes of LD a month, it is a nice alternative to long distance through the land lines.

Finally, for work. I am on call 24/7/365. And I do get called 24/7/365 wherever I am. In Phoenix. In San Diego. In Illinois. As my boss says, it doesn't matter any more, if someone needs to call, I can always be reached!

So what is your primary use for the cell phone, and can you imagine life without it? Also...those of you without cell phones, do you have cordless phones nonetheless at your home?

Gotta quit now. Calling Illinois for my weekly chat with my dad!

I for one "HATE" the dam things "LOL!" They are a GREAT source of irriation to me personally. I use ours for emergency purposes only ie Searches, accidents when traveling. Michelle on the other hand *sigh* "HAS" to stay in touch with her sister 24/7 which is OK I guess, I can't STAND being in touch with someone 24/7's, I'm somewhat of a recluse I guess you could say.

I use mine mostly as a "pager" so others can get in touch with me. Aside from that, I only use it on weekends when I go relax on the Seawall (because I can't get a good signal at home near the hospital) to make those "free" long distance calls to my grandparents and other friends outside the Hou/Galv area and on long trips to contact my S2K buddies. :)

had one, never used it, got rid of it. 40 bucks a month is too much to spend for a worthless device especially during inclement wx.

I keep mine in my car to use for emergency purposes only. I don't use it for "chatting".

I have a funny story. Yesterday I went to my local Jiffy Lube to get an oil change and one of my brake bulbs replaced. The kid that drove my car out of the bay weh it was done said that my phone "scared the crap out of him" because when he turned the car off, my phone started to "buzz" at him. I guess that's one way to scare off someone from stealing the car!! LOL!

LOL, Steph!

I keep mine handy, and, that's about it. I am
still on dial-up, and, have only one phone line.
Someone may call, occassionaly, while
I'm online, and we keep it short. I have 250
free minutes, with free nights and weekends,
and, I never use 30 of those minutes in a month!

But, it's there and charged, when I need it.

I have a huge pet peeve about cell phones--immature college students who bring them into class after repeated warnings!!!

Wasn't a cell phone...but one time while employed as a utility man in the maintenance dept. at a hotel...I was outside sweeping up trash in the parking lot and was emptying the contents of my trash collector tool into a receptacle.
A guest car's honking alarm suddenly sounded and it startled the *whatever* out of me!! At the same time this couple (who's car sounded!) were "enjoying" the moment at my expense and just cracking up from what I noticed of them in their first floor room!

Needless to say...I also despise vehicle security alarms! :x

I hate that, too. I always leave mine in the car before heading to my classes.

I use my cell phone as a life line in case of emergency. I travel an hour both ways to the university and back 5 days a week so it comes in handy. For example, on Thursday when the car wouldn't start I called my grandfather who came and helped me out. Without the cell phone I would have had to trudge three blocks during a thunderstorm to find a pay phone to track him down by calling collect.

I also talk to friends and family on it, mainly on weekends. And Eric probably wouldn't like mine because it plays "When You Lie Next To Me" by Kellie Coffey when someone calls and when someone either leaves me a voice message or texts me it plays "Long Time Gone" by the Dixie Chicks.

I use mine only for emergencies. I never leave it on (unless I am making a call) and have no voice mail. But there have been a few times I was VERY glad I had it.

Yes, and those night and weekend minutes will be useful if you want to call home as well.
