CNN Headline News = Idiots

#1 Postby MWatkins » Sun Mar 28, 2004 11:14 pm

I just saw a quick blurb on the south atlantic hurricane. CNN Headline news noted it was unique (if it was a hurricane...come on now) because it was the first ever for the south atlantic...AND...get ready for this...

"It occured well outside the usual hurricane season which starts June 1st".

Sure...outside the hurricane season in the NORTHERN HEMISPHERE.

Late March in the southern hemisphere is the same as late SEPTEMBER in the northern hemisphere.

Gee, I guess hurricanes are unusual in SEPTEMBER. Thanks Headline news!

Idiots.

Who said it? Was it in the on-going news where someone is reading a teleprompter? Just curious because the real meteorologists at CNN likely would not have written that text for someone to read. Maybe just the evening news producer and line editor. Who knows.

It still is better than "the Gulf of Georgia" or refering to the area near the ITCZ as "equator-al region (read as e-quay-tor-all)" like someone I know from TWC.

Not everyone is as up on the tropics as we are.... 8-)

There really is no hurricance season established for the South Atlantic, because there isn't supposed be any storms there. And you got to understand newsreporters aren't mets or weather freaks. The same thing would of been said on the other networks. They don't any better.

And techinically isn't the season the ATLANTIC season on the NHC website? Unlike some of the other oceans that say EPAC and CPAC seasons, etc.

The below comes from the NHC website:

Atlantic & Caribbean
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eastern Pacific
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 through November 30.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can see where they would make this mistake.
