So I want to build a website
I think it's finally time for me to make my own website, but I don't really know where to begin. I've toyed with Geocities a bit within the last few years, and I've taken a web mastering course at school, but I don't know how to go about getting it off the ground. I'm not sure if I want to use a free host, or if I want to get my own domain name. I think I want my own domain name. I realize this costs money, but I don't think it's out of my reach. I just want something reliable and neat where I can show off my pictures, talk about weather, and other odds and ends. Mostly, I want to showcase my photography. Can anyone give a few pointers on how to get started, what are the best website builders, how to register a domain name, and other things? I'd greatly appreciate it.

I have yet to finish mine and I'm going with the standard Geocities plan. But how about Geocities Pro ( http://geocities.yahoo.com/ ) for $8.95/month so you can have your own domain name, plus since you're comfortable with it already, it might be easier to build.
Not sure...just a suggestion.

That sounds like a plan Shawn. My biggest concern with Geocities though is whether or not it allows hotlinking to other sites. I know it doesn't allow it on the free version, but how about the pro version? The pro version doesn't come with ads does it? The free sits are problematic because the bandwidth can be pretty easily exceeded. I don't want my site to be down a whole lot.

Until we moved onto this server we used iPowerweb out of California. They have a great package! Our cost for the first year was 96.00 and that included our domain registration for the first year. We were very happy with both their pricing and package contents. Give them a look before you decide

FWIW, Geocities Pro gives you 10 GB of bandwidth a month, and 25 MB storage space standard for the $8.95 a month and is a good deal, especially if you use a lot of bandwidth with pictures and animations ... I'd go with it ...
And yes, with the package deals outside of the free stuff, it does allow hotlinking ... so you can tag your images to the messageboards with no problem ...

iPowerweb's package is 800MB of disk space, 40GB of transfer. If you pre-pay for a year then it's 7.95/month and they include your domain registration for free!

Believe me we researched a whole bunch of providers before we settled on them

I've done some research and I've found some domain names that I like. I want to give my website a name that fits the majority of its content. Since I love taking pictures of city streetscapes, skylines, and just general scenery be it urban or rural, I want a name that covers that, but without it sounding awkward. I want something that is easily remembered and catchy. I've narrowed it down to 5:
http://www.southernskylines.com
http://www.southernurbanity.com
http://www.cityscenery.com
http://www.streetscenesusa.com
http://www.cityscrapers.com
Now, I like the first one, but it makes it sound like it's limited only to coverage of the south. Right now and in the forseeable future, that's all my website will cover. But I want to have the entire US covered at some point of my life, so I want to accommodate for that now. I also want to try to stick with .com, but if push comes to shove, I'll do .org or .net. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Although I`m happy where I am, that is an excellent deal with with a wide range of add-ons.

Hey OtherHD, I just heard you want to set up a web site. If you'd like a static portal page to show off your main website, I will code up one for you, just like this page:
http://crossroads110.tripod.com/4ColumnDesign.html
I will do it for you for FREE and it will be fun. Just let me know what colors you'd like!! Post them in this thread and I will set it up. Then Marshall can take the code and help you with the rest of your site.
-Jeb / K. Ben Ebberly. (Yeah, I am both Jeb and K. Ben Ebberly)
