Hurricane 'Catarina' kills 10

Brazilian authorities have called off the search for eight fishermen missing since an unprecedented hurricane swept the nation's southern coast six days ago.

Salvamar Sul, the agency in charge of rescue operations, says the search has been called off because there are no signs the missing men have survived last Sunday's storm.

Two fishermen have been rescued and the bodies of two others have been found after their boats sank in the storm.

The storm, dubbed "Catarina" after the state of Santa Catarina where it made landfall, is the first recorded hurricane in the south Atlantic.

However, some scientists disagree over whether it should instead have been considered a tropical storm.
