Pot refugee may be hiding out in Canada to avoid prosecution

March 6, 2003 (Vancouver, British Columbia) — Steve Kubby is claiming to be a pot refugee. He's seeking political asylum in Canada, saying he'll be prosecuted for marijuana possession if he returns to California.

He says he needs to smoke dope at least once an hour, to control symptoms of a rare adrenal cancer. The Canadian immigration official presiding over Kubby's hearing is sympathetic.

Kubby is being given hourly joint breaks. But Canadian federal prosecutors are challenging Kubby's refugee status. They say he's trying to avoid jail in California on a peyote conviction.

Man shoots computer while customers watch

March 5, 2003 (Lafayette, Colorado) — How many times have you wanted to shoot your computer? Well, George Doughty was plenty P-O'd and blasted his PC.

Doughty says his laptop crashed once too often. So, he allegedly shot it four times as customers watched in his Sportsman's Bar and Restaurant in Lafayette, Colorado.

The dead computer is now hanging as a trophy on the wall of the tavern.

Police Lieutenant Rick Bashor admits the incident is kind of funny. But he says firing a gun in the bar endangered customers.

Doughty has a court appearance today. But Doughty says at the time, it seemed like the right thing to do

LOL the right thing to do... My husband was playing a round of practice darts while I was closing up the resturant I used to manage in SA. He kept missing the bull's eye and the dart kept landing on the floor. So he pulled out his '45 and shot the sh*t out of it. There was no one else in there but the two of us. Needles to say I got such a fright he had to come coax me out from between the beer kegs! The board (or whats left of it) still hangs there too this day!

Dear me....LoL....

I think that, instead of a giant Cheetoh display,
the little town in Iowa would draw better tourism
by having a computer that everyone could pay a few
bucks to take a shot at! There's days we'd ALL pay...! :ggreen:

Candidate's Car Stolen While Campaigning Against Crime

POSTED: 4:42 p.m. EST March 6, 2003
UPDATED: 10:27 p.m. EST March 6, 2003

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- You always hear candidates campaigning that they'll crack down on crime. Now, one Central Florida candidate knows, firsthand, what it's like to be the victim. Yesterday, Mary Beth Fitzgibbons left her car in a parking lot while she campaigned for state senate. When she returned last night, the car was gone.

Fitzgibbons is quite familiar with the Orange County Sheriff's Office. After all, she's a former prosecutor who handled car theft cases. Today, she's counting on these deputies to locate her missing car. "I left it there because I was meeting a volunteer for the campaign there, and it was a safe place where I'd left the car before," said Fitzgibbons.

However, when she returned to the Waffle House restaurant at the intersection of Alafaya Trail and state road 50, she discovered it wasn't so safe. "I knew, right away, because the parking lot was empty and I was concerned because the car wasn't there."

She checked to make sure it hadn't been towed and even asked the neighboring Ramada Inn. Then, she called the sheriff's office.

They determined that her gold Lexus car had, in fact, been stolen. Fitzgibbons says that she left all of her campaign literature in the car's back seat, along with some voter's interview notes for a Friday night debate.

Throughout the ordeal, Mary Beth has managed to maintain her sense of humor. "He's [going to] see stacks of signs, who knows, maybe he'll put them up in the district." The signs read, "Mary Beth Knows Criminal Justice."

The election is Tuesday when Mary Beth Fitzgibbons faces Mike Haridopolos in the Republican primary. The winner will face Democrat Donna Hart on March 25. In the meantime, Mary Beth is going to need to find another way to get around.

Man Drowns While Mowing Lawn

POSTED: 10:54 a.m. EST March 11, 2003

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A Fort Myers man is dead after his riding lawn mower rolled into a lake.

Authorities say Poinciano Rodriguez was UNable to swim. He was pronounced dead yesterday at HealthPark Medical Center.

Rodriguez worked for Smallwood Landscape. He was mowing the lawn behind the Harbour Links condominiums when he slid into the lake in Gulf Harbor.

Rodriguez came to the surface once, then went under. An off-duty Lee County deputy was sleeping in a nearby condo and heard the commotion. He went outside and helped pull Rodriguez out of the water, then performed C-P-R until paramedics arrived.

Deputies say the mower will be examined to see if a mechanical problem caused the accident.

Woman Pronounced Dead Three Times

POSTED: 10:45 a.m. EST March 14, 2003

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Authorities in Jacksonville say a woman is finally and really dead, after being pronounced so twice, then being discovered alive.

It happened Tuesday, as the woman was moved from place to place by emergency personnel. Authorities are investigating to get details of what happened.

Kathryn Hancock-Julien was originally pronouned dead from an apparent overdose suicide in a hotel room on Tuesday. Plans were made to take the body to the medical examiner's office, but a forensic investigator saw her chin move.

The woman was then taken to St. Luke's Hospital. She was pronounced dead for a second time there, after resuscitation attempts apparently failed. But she was then seen breathing again a short time later.

Soon after, Hancock-Julien was pronounced dead a third and final time. An internal investigation is trying to determine if rescue officials followed protocol in the hotel room. Hospital officials have declined comment.

Mom Didn't Even Know She Was PregnantPOSTED: 9:40 a.m. EST March 15, 2003

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio -- Motherhood really snuck up on Linda Erwin-Hutchins.

The Ohio woman started feeling abdominal pains Thursday and seven hours later, she gave birth to a baby girl. Erwin-Hutchins didn't even know she was pregnant.

She said she was never sick, never gained weight and never got tired.

The 41-year-old said she and her husband were not trying to have children, but they are both delighted. The couple has been married for 10 years and this is their first child.

Erwin-Hutchins says when her husband found out he was a dad, his eyes were as big as saucers.

Little Caitlin Meryl Hutchins is said to be doing fine. She weighed in at five pounds, one ounce.
