I just remembered another great line from a song..

"I am stronger than yesterday.. Now it's nothin but my way.. My lonliness is killing me no more.. and I AM STRONGER!" :)

Forgive me if that's silly lol But Britney's words have helped me through my depression battle

LOL Steve!! You're so right!

Stormy weather is very romantic! As illustrated by U2....

The sea is swells like a sore head
and the night it is aching
Two lovers lie with no sheets on their bed
and the day it is breaking

On rainy days we go swimming out
on rainy days, swimming in the sound
On rainy days we go swimming out

You're in my mind all of the time
I know that's not enough
if the sky can crack
there must be some way back
for love and only love

Car alarm and back to sleep
you kept awake dreaming some else's dream
coffee is cold, but it will get you through
compromise, there's nothing new to you
let's see colours that have never been seen
let's go to places no one else has been

You're in my mind all of the time
I know that's not enough
if the sky can crack
there must be some way back
to love and only love

Electrical Storm
Electrical Storm
Electrical Storm
Baby don't cry

It's hot as hell, honey in this room
sure hope the weather will break soon
the air is heavy, heavy as a truck
hope the rain will wash away our bad luck

I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightning
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night

At first I was afraid,
I was petrified,
Thinking I could never live without you by my side....

From "The Replacements". Cracks me up every time I see Orlando Jones(I think that's his name) singing that song!

I got to thinking on my ride in this morning how lyrics have changed over the years.
If I may be so blunt…rap makes me want to throw up!

Here is an example of two artists using a line(s) in their song to say something “suggestive”, but take notice of “artist” number 2, and the filth that spews from his disgusting mouth. (btw…these were some of the cleanest lyrics I could find from this waste product)

1. “Any girl in this world could have easily known me better” --- Buffalo Springfield --- Mr. Soul
We know what he’s talking about here…he doesn’t have to say it.

2. “ I wanna get you in the back seat windows up
that’s the way you like to f***, clogged up fog alert
Rip the pants and rip the shirt, ruff sex make it hurt
In the garden all in the dirt ---- Ludicras --- What’s your fantasy
This is complete trash…need I say more?

This is my rant for the day

I get a few Canadian stations and this is on the Country Station across the lake. They play a lot of American tunes but this is a Canadian one that most probably haven't heard that I like a lot.

Paul Brandt
Small Towns and Big Dreams
Written by - Paul Brandt
From - Small Towns and Big Dreams

I grew up in a small town
Wheat fields for a downtown kind of place
There was really not much around
You blink and you miss it

I never knew what life would bring
But I always had big dreams
I love to play my guitar and sing
And every night I'd wish that

I'd get a shot on the Opry stage
Have people come and see me play
Blastin' out on the radio waves
Enough to make my mama cry

Chorus:
Cause that's where I come from
That's who I am
Hard workin' and God blessed
Yes sir, thank you ma'am
The best things around that I have ever seen
Came from small towns and big dreams

Small town went and grew up
But I never changed much by God's grace
Friends and family kept in touch
When I moved to Tennessee

I sing my songs and travel 'round
I met a girl and we're settlin' down
We want to find a small town
Where we can raise a family

Chorus

Been around the world don't matter anywhere I go
Small town stars to city lights
I find my kind of folks
It's about you and who you are
It's all a state of mind
And as I'm giving you my heart
I hope you find

That's where I come from
That's who I am
Hard workin' and God blessed
Yes sir, thank you ma'am
The best things around that I have ever seen
Just look around you'll see what I mean
The best things around that I have ever seen
Came from small towns and big dreams
That's where I come from
Small towns
That's who I am
And big dreams
That's where I come from
Small towns
That's who I am
And big dreams

As a writer, lyrics are very important to me, and I hear plenty that make me cringe. Ben Folds writes some pretty good lyrics. They can either be quite witty, such as this portion of the song "Army":

Well I thought about the army
Dad said, Son you must be high
And I thought, yeah there's a first for everything
So I took my old man's advice
Three sad semesters
It was only 15 grand spent in bed
I thought about the army
I dropped out and joined a band instead

Grew a moustache and a mullet
Got a job at Chick-fil-a
Citing artistic differences
The band broke up in May
And in June reformed without me
And they'd got a different name
I nuked another grandma's apple pie
And hung my head in shame

Or, quite touching as in the song Jane, and these are the whole lyrics that my wife told me gets her through many a time when she doubts herself:

Jane be Jane
You're better that way
Not when your trying
Imitating something you think you saw

Jane be Jane
And if sometimes that might
Drive them away
Let them stay there
You don't need them anyway

You're worried there might not be
Anything at all inside
That you're worried
Should tell you that's not right
Don't try to see yourself
The way that others do
It's no use

You're worried there might not be
Anything at all inside
But that you're worried
Should tell you that's not right
You've had it harder than anyone could know
So hard to let it go

But its your life
You can decorate it
As you like
Beneath the pain and armour
In your eyes the truth still shines

Jane be Jane
Jane be Jane

Wanna see a perfect example of horrible, absolutely cringe worthy lyrics? This is just the height of trash and it's shocking to me that there are people out here who can relate to this or even listen to it without having to turn it off, not from offense but from the cringe factor. What the hell is going on in minds of these people??

From "Disturbed"(how about merely..."those trapped at the first chakra"?)...a very popular band:

"Down With The Sickness"

Drowning deep in my sea of loathing
Broken your servant I kneel
It seems what's left of my human side
Is slowly changing in me

Looking at my own reflection
When suddenly it changes
Violently it changes (oh no)
There is no turning back now
You've woken up the demon in me

[Chorus:]
Get up, come on get down with the sickness [x3]
Open up your hate, and let it flow into me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
You mother get up come on get down with the sickness
You ****** get up come on get down with the sickness
Madness is the gift, that has been given to me

I can see inside you, the sickness is rising
Don't try to deny what you feel
(Will you give in to me?)
It seems that all that was good has died
And is decaying in me

It seems you're having some trouble
In dealing with these changes
Living with these changes (oh no)
The world is a scary place
Now that you've woken up the demon in me

[Chorus x2]

(And when I dream) [x4]
No mommy, don't do it again
Don't do it again
I'll be a good boy
I'll be a good boy, I promise
No mommy don't hit me
Why did you have to hit me like that, mommy?
Dont do it, you're hurting me
Why did you have to be such a *****
Why don't you,
Why don't you **** off and die
Why can't you just **** off and die
Why can't you just leave here and die
Never stick your hand in my face again *****
**** YOU
I don't need this ****
You stupid sadistic abusive ******* *****
How would you like to see how it feels mommy
Here it comes, get ready to die

[Chorus (last line changed to "Madness has now come over me")]

Another great source of song lyrics are The Cowboy Junkies, a band that features some excellent songwriting and the hauntingly beautiful singing of Margo Timmons. This song has some of my favorite lyrics, thought I would post it on here since I figured many of you from the South would enjoy it:

Southern Rain

The flies have quit their buzzing
Even Bear has stopped his barking
They all sense something brewing
up the James and headed this way

Bobby sips his morning coffee
Says `Have you finished with the funnies
Looks like a storm's coming honey
guess we'll have to stay in bed today'

I've heard that into every life
a little of it must fall
If there's any truth to the saying,
Lord, let it be a southern rain

Marie was born in Macon, Georgia
She met a west coast lawyer
He plucked that sweet magnolia
and carried her to the hills of West L.A.

She says `I never thought I'd tire of a dollar
But this life has grown so hollow
Every night there's lipstick on his collar
and every morning I wash it away'

She heard that into every life
a little of it must fall
So she spends her evenings praying
for a little of that southern rain

Cars alive on city streets
of sparkling black water
like waves beneath my window
never break just roll away
Tonight, this rain will be my lullaby
these cars, my dreams
to carry me home to stay

The wipers beat a rhythm
Truck spray obscures my vision
But I'm closing in on my destination
Two more hours and I'll be at your door

And it will never cease to amaze me
how a little rain can drive folks crazy
When I'd trade all my blue skies gladly
for your blue eyes, crooked smile
and a steady downpour

I've heard that into every life
a little of it must fall,
but you'll never catch me complaining
about too much of that southern rain

Ani Difranco - Serpentine Lyrics

Pavlov hits me with more bad news every time I answer the phone

So I play and I sing and I just let it ring,
All day when I’m at home

A defacto choice of
Macro-microcosmic melancholy
But baby any way you slice it,
I’m thinkin I could just as soon use the time alone

Yeah the goons have gone global
And the ceo’s are shredding files
And the democrans and the republicrats
Are flashing their toothy smiles

And uncle tom is posing for a photo-op with the oval office klan

And uncle sam is riggin’ cockfights in the promised land
And that knife you stuck in my back is still there
It pinches a little when I sigh and moan
And these days I’m thinkin I could just as soon use the time alone

Cause all the wrong people have the power of suggestion
And the freedom of the press is meaningless if nobody asks the
question
I mean causation by definition is such a complex compilation
of factors
That to even try to say why is to oversimplify
That’s a far cry, isn’t it dear, from acting like you’re the only
one there
Unrepentantly self-centered and unfair

Enter all suckers scrambling for the truth
Exit mr. eye-contact who took his flirt and flew the coup
But whatever, no matter, no fishin trips, no fishin
Cause momma’s officially out of commission

And did I mention in there somewhere
Did I mention somewhere in there
That I traded babe ruth,
Yes I traded the only player
That was bigger than the game
And I can’t even tell you why,
Cause you’d think I’m insane.
And that’s the truth

And the music industry mafia is pimping girl power
Sniping off sharp-shooter singles from their styrofoam towers,

And hip-hop is tied up in the back room with a logo stuffed in it’s
mouth
Cause the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house

But then, I’m getting away from myself
As I get closer and closer home
And the difference between you and me baby
Is I get ****** up when I’m alone

And I must admit today
That my inner pessimist seems to have gotten the best of me
We start out sugared up on kool aid and manifest destiny
And then we memorize all the presidents names like little trained
monkeys
And we spit into the world so many spinny-eyed tv junkies

Incapable of unraveling the military-industrial mystery
Pre-emptively passified with history book history
And I’ve been around the world now and I can see this about america

The mind control is deep here, man
The myopia is steep here, man

And behold those who try to expose the reality
Really try to realize democracy
Are shot with rubber bullets and gassed off the streets
While the global power brokers are kept clean and discreet
Behind a wall
Behind a moat
And that is all
That’s all
That’s all she wrote

And my heart beats an s-s-s o-o-o s-s-s
Cause folks just really couldn’t care-care-care less-less-less

As long as every day is superbowl sunday
And larger than life women in lingerie are pouting at us from every
bus stop
She loves me, she loves me not
She loves me, she loves me not
She loves me, she loves me not

And "big government should not stand between a man and his money"

I mean, "what’s good for business is good for the country"
Our children still take that lie like communion,
The same old line the confederacy used on the union

Conjugate liberty into libertarian
And medicated associated with deregulation privitization

We won’t even know we’re slaves on a corporate plantation

Somebody say hallelujah,
Somebody say damnation,
Cause the profit system follows the path of least resistance

And the path of least resistance is what makes the river crooked

Makes it serpentine
Capitalism is the devil’s wet dream

So just give me my judy garland drugs and let me get back to work

Cause the empire state building is the tallest building in new
york
And I have always got the feeling
You just like to hear it fall off your tongue

But I remember my name in your mouth
And I don’t think I was done hearing it close to my ear
On a whisper’s way to a moan

Pavlov hits me with more bad news every time I answer the phone

So I play and I sing and just let it ring,
All day when I’m at home

A defacto choice of
Macro-microcosmic melancholy
But baby any way you slice it,
I’m thinkin I could just as soon use the time alone

Remember when you ran away and I got on my knees and begged you not to
leave because I'd go berserk?? Well...
You left me anyhow and then the days got worse and worse and now you see
I've gone completely out of my mind.. And..
They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa
To the funny farm. Where life is beautiful all the time and I'll be
happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats and they're
coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!!!!

You thought it was a joke and so you laughed, you laughed when I had said
that loosing you would make me flip my lid.. RIGHT???
I know you laughed, I heard you laugh, you laughed you laughed and
laughed and then you left, but now you know I'm utterly mad... And..

They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa,
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa.
To the happy home. With trees and flowers and chirping birds and basket
weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes and they're
coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!!

I cooked your food, I cleaned your house, and this is how you pay me back
for all my kind unselfish loving deeds.. Huh??
Well you just wait, they'll find you yet and when they do they'll put you
in the ASPCA, you mangy mutt!!! And...

They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa.
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa.
To the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time and I'll be happy
to see those nice young men in their clean white coats and they're coming
to take me away, ha-haaa!!!
To the happy home, with trees and flowers and chirping birds and basket
weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes and they're
coming to take me away, ha-haa!!!
To the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time... (fade out)

Down with the Sickness ...

an absolutely awesome song that delves into the horrors of child abuse, and written in the style of an angry youth who grows up hating the things that his mother did and wanting revenge (and justice). And many times, what one experiences is when one can write the most powerful and yet, sometimes the darkest of lyrics ...

And stories like thisf DEFINITELY (and unfortunately) occur much more often than one wants to think about ... A close friend of mine's sister has two children and she couldn't care less about those children except for when it comes time to collect the welfare check so she can get her high off of crack. She neglects the children and will leave them all weekend so she can get laid and high. Fortunately, this person was arrested for prostitution and drug paraphenalia.

Gotta admit, I never EVER thought about killing my mom, even though she was abusive as hell. Myself, maybe, but not her. I used to wish there was some kind of escape. But certainly not her death.

I don't listen to them. That sounds like some pretty angry stuff to me. I'm more a pop music aficionado.

But I take it you don't watch movies? Talk about some sick stuff. I'm amazed that anyone came up with "Se7en." All those notebooks??? All that organization just like what an obsessed serial killer would do? *shiver* That one didn't disturb me like "Heavenly Creatures" did. I had to turn away during the last scene and it wasn't even all that graphic. But Melanie Lynskey's (the actress portraying Pauline) expressions were just horrific. And that's based on a real story, so talk about sick!

Pretty much agree with you; I don't completely hate Disturbed, and even have a few MP3's from them on my hard drive, but the lyrics to that song (and admittedly most of their others) come off as almost as manufactured and plastic as Britney's, just targeted at a different audience. I sometimes question whether any lyrics are truly written without profit in mind; I love bands like Tool and Radiohead and the complexity of their work makes it apparent that they are at least somewhat sincere -- because they could easily make money without putting forth so much effort -- but even Maynard and Tom Yorke may not always be writing lyrics solely for their artistic value.

What really ticks me off are people who bash the lyrics of one group while claiming that those of another band are divine insight and the biggest thing since Shakespeare, when in fact there is some amount of commercialism involved in pretty much all popular recorded music.

I'm aware of this. That's why I said controversy aside, or whatever I said.
The fact of the matter is that that is simply trash art. It's crap.
Any 9 year old can write that, and taken at face value...perhaps it holds art value in a societal manner...but on it's own...it's nothing more than trite, cliche garbage.
