Yesterday I was attending/speaking at a lecture on bio-ethics. The auditorium was at capacity with 326 guests.Over 250 were students.I was the 4th speaker out 7.My lecture was on stem-cell procedures vs. abortion. The theme here is important to what happens during and after my speech. Here is my opening:
In order for me to give you my opinion on this matter or any matter of ethics,I believe that my personal and professional feelings on this subject should be made out in the open and before I lecture. Some will say this only hurts your overall speech as most will prejudge you by expressing your opinions.(Sadly this is true)However,I believe being upfront is the best way.I hope not to change your opinion on this matter, only to change the way you think about the subject.
Simple version:
I am Pro-life and I am for stem cell research.
I let my personal beliefs on these matters be known and then spoke for 15 minutes on abortion and stell cell research. After was a 5 minute question and answer session.I was hammered!! Not by students, but the faculty. It turned into a Democrat vs Republican debate, left vs right war of words. They were right I was wrong. Finally a student asked the faculty why were they so upset by what I said. She said the speaker before me was pro choice and for stem cell research and not one faculty member asked a question. She then said,"You never let a student ask Dr.Oliver a question. Please stop pushing our political idealogy on us!' Then as she was walking out there was a few who were booing her. Then the place erupted in appluase.I asked her to sit back down and not to give into the politics, because that is what they want you to do.She didn't.
The real reason I write this is for the following reasons:
The next 3 professors who lecutured spoke against Bush,Iraq and the economy.(Only to make mention of what i said,so they could justify that they spoke on bio-ethics)All 3 told the students that if Bush was re-elected that abortion would be outlawed and they would only have a 25% of landing a job that matches their degree. But if Kerry was elected the war in Iraq would be over and abortion rights will be hardened. All 3 said Kerry will create 10 million jobs and quickly.Their theme changed because of what I said and the reaction by faculty. They tried as hard as they could to deflate my stance and any influence I might have had on the students. It was so obivous and child like I could only laugh. The good thing is these 3 professors were guest speakers and will not have a direct influence on the student body.Today I learned that students who attended the lecture have all signed a petition to have the attending faculty apologize to me and to them. At this time it has over 215 signature form students and some faculty members. Also I spoke to one of the 3 professors and she told me that the right wing conspiracy has put this country in such a divide that we need to defend our positions at every chance. She said the liberal is the little guy trying to make ends meet. She said liberals never get to voice their opinions. She said people on the right want America to dominate the world and to force religion down our throats. She said that America is out of work and we need those 10 millions jobs. She said politics is best taught in college and she will do waht she can to show her students the right way. This is coming from a professor of Neurobiology!
America is out of work?
It was child like and that is what is most troubling.
Here is something from Boortz:
sKERRY IS AT IT AGAIN
In a campaign stop yesterday in Cincinnati, John Kerry once again promised that he would create 10 million more jobs if elected. He never really says how, except that George Bush wouldn't do it. Those evil Republicans like people to be out of work, and why, when Kerry takes office, 10 million jobs will automatically flood the market for the single largest economic growth spurt in history! Yeah right...dry that one out and you could fertilize the lawn.
What's interesting is that no one calls him out on it. He can stand there and say things like he'll create 10 million jobs, or he would fight a war on terrorism that would actually make America safer, and he isn't made to tell how. All the media does is run to the Bush campaign and make them answer Kerry's challenge. Nice balanced reporting there, fellas.
Oh..and one other thing. Kerry was heckled by about a dozen protestors clapping flip-flop sandals together. sKerry called them "college Republicans" and said they were rude.
Poor baby.

Close the borders, send the illegals home, and put 10 million American citizens to work in place of the illegals who were once employed here.
That's one way to get more jobs out there for Americans AND solve the illegal immigration problem. No need to "create" new jobs. Just hire Americans for the ones that are already created.

Everyone makes promises when they are campaigning for office. Hopefully the promises are not pie in the sky and there is a plan as to how it will be accomplished.
When push comes to shove, a person THAT WANTS TO WORK will take any job, just to get money in. Unfortunately, those same people will have to work two jobs in order to get by because of the low pay.

Steph,
You have, inadvertently, hit upon why raising the minimum wage doesn't work in creating jobs...every time the minimum wage is raised, the manager/owners of all these entry-level jobsites have to CUT employees to stay competitive and meet the overhead...hence, fewer workers doing more, and qualifications rise as well for the positions when available.
The Dems just don't "get it"..I hope you do, now.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong....but do we consider, as a statisical fact, citizens on the welfare bandwagon to be "out of work"?
If so....why not FORCE these individuals to take the jobs that "no Americans want". Sounds like a simple solution to me!

I completely agree with that. A raise in the min. wage sounds good, but it has a lot of drawbacks... like Bill pointed out so well.

Yes it does. Whatever happened the Welfare to Work program?
Bill, I understand where you are coming from, but there are cost of living issues to contend with. Corporations have cut back on so much and are trying to squeeze as much as they possibly can from each employee without reimbursement. I've seen it happen here.

Incidentally
the Republicans won't send the illegals home either which is why one of their senior Congressmen is in trouble here in Cochise County. This is also why the true story of what is going on along our Southern Border is being suppressed to prevent YOU the General Public from knowing just how bad things are down here and about the hoards of people that are inundating us with little or no security along the border. The Republicans want amnesty for illegals without Border Security and the Democrats want citizenship for illegals without Border Security all to curry favor with what is now the largest minority voting bloc in the Country at the expense of US Citizens-a Pox on both their houses I say.
