Chicks' Critical Remarks About Bush Create Controversy

#1 Postby bfez1 » Fri Mar 14, 2003 2:29 pm

NASHVILLE, Tennessee - The Dixie Chicks are drawing harsh words from country music fans for remarks singer Natalie Maines made about President George W. Bush during a recent performance in London.

Maines told the audience earlier this week, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

Angry phone calls flooded Nashville radio station WKDF-FM on Thursday, some calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.

The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and "the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."

Yes, I'm saddened at this. I am re-evaluating whether they will remain a favortie band or not.

Just another example that entertainers should entertain.

I never liked them, but why put the pres down for where he lives?

I agree with everyone on this Dixie Chick issue. Andrew McCarthy (actor) said basically the same things about Reagan, and he has not worked since. He played in St. Elmo's Fire, Weekend at Bernie's, Mannequin.

Another thing I do not understand... they came out with a song that was originally recorded by Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. How in the world can they win a grammy for a song that was written by someone else years ago? Stevie sings it better than they do, but yet, she did not win a grammy for it. :?

Again, as with Sheryl Crow, I am a big fan of the Dixie Chicks's music, despite what political comments they may make. One thing they did that Sheryl did not do, however, is say that they supported the troops. I haven't heard Sheryl say that at all yet, even though she supported them during the Clinton era.

Right, but why go as far as to saying that she's ashamed the pres lives there? Makes no sense.

Well, I'm PROUD the president of the United States is from Texas. I wonder if that'll make headlines!!

Calling for a boycott, eh? These folks may start backtracking when their popularity suffers. Popularity is all they live for. That is their life.

I like their music but that was uncalled for. You wonder why she would do something so stupid. It can only her their record sales. It'll be interesting to see hwta kind of reaction they get when they come back to the states...

Well guys here I go...I am going to stand up on my soapbox just for a minute before you knock me down. First off... being a fan of the Chicks...this has no impact on my like or dislike of their music. Now...

I think Natalie was dumb for saying these things outside the US... and she would have been better off if she had never said them. However, DOES NO ONE ELSE SEE THE DOUBLE STANDARD?? A few days ago we were bashing the actors/celebs who were protesting the war saying their opinion does not matter. Then we get mad at the Chicks and people say they should shut up. Yet...we praise Charlie Daniels for his pro-Bush remarks. Whichever way you feel... YOU MUST ADMIT THIS IS A DOUBLE STANDARD!

EITHER YOU DISCOUNT ALL CELEBS OPINIONS OR YOU CONSIDER AND RESPECT ALL CELEBS OPINIONS NO MATTER WHAT THEY MAY BE! You don't have to agree with them, but you should not get mad for them saying it -- that is called being partisan and I for one am SICK AND TIRED of it.

And for people to boycott the Chicks because of an opinion someone said?? Isn't that extreme...unless you are going to quit watching the West Wing (which I think most people have anyways  ), not watch any movies that have Alec Baldwin in them (by the way...wasn't he supposed to leave America already?), not listen to any station that plays Barbara Streisand, not watch any show that talks with Jeanine Garafolo, etc?

Okay, okay. I am off the soap box. You can start ripping into me, but I am telling you...you can't have it both ways!

Ciao...for now!

We are merely observers and not speakers ourselves, so we cannot be favored or criticized by anyone of mass populations. In other words, we comment on what others say and we are all different and opinionated. I still dont get it. lol

I think the support for Charlie Daniels was as much about some balance to the issue as anything else. While I agree with his viewpoint his opinion doesn't sway me anymore that the other Hollywood crowd! If any entertainer takes a very public position on a political position then they stand a risk of alienating some of their fans. If they don't realize that then they are dumber than I already think. When we are at a time of potential and highly likely war, to ridicule the President when you are overseas if just bad form and shows a lack of class.

As far as boycotting, that's an individual choice. I refuse to watch anything that Jane Fonda is in because of her activities during the Vietnam war. Her actions were treasonous. The Chicks thing isn't anywhere near that level but nonetheless it shouldn't have happened. JMHO

I agree MF. To criticize overseas is dumb and stupid. I just think that we need to have some balance...if we hate all celeb's comments, then we should discount all of them...not just the one's that we don't agree with.

I listen to the Dixie Chicks and could careless about the comment Natalie Maines made about Pres Bush. It would be quite extreme if I boycotted their music.
