Microsoft Finds New Windows Security Flaws

By Mike Musgrove
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, April 14, 2004; Page E05

Microsoft Corp. said yesterday that it had identified a host of new security flaws in its software, some of which could allow hackers to remotely commandeer vulnerable computers, and it urged users to install a series of software updates to address the problem.

Computer experts said it appeared that hackers had not yet exploited any of the security holes. The vulnerabilities were discovered mostly by computer security firms and researchers, who alerted Microsoft so it could develop solutions. The company posted four security bulletins on its Web site yesterday as part of a monthly effort to release updates to its Windows operating system software.

The Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/security/) leads users through the steps they need to follow to download and install the updates. Patches are available for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98 and newer releases, including Windows Me and XP.

Microsoft rated three of the four security bulletins as critical, requiring prompt attention. The fourth it rated important. It said the critical bulletins accounted for 20 vulnerabilities in various versions of the company's Windows software.

I have high-speed Internet and it was still difficult to get on. Finally after literally 7 tries I got on and downloaded the patches.

My patches come in on "auto-load", but it has taken three days for them to get to 60% as of this post.

I checked for updates last night/early this morning and there aren't any patches.

I suppose, but I never set them to download updates automatically. There are downloads there, but none of them are patches.

FINALLY, I got the "full Monty"...took 3 days to download it, and it took up .23GB; now, I'll find out soon enough if it was worth the trip.

The downloads should not be too bad, one download is 1.9 MB and the other 3 are 284 KB each; so it won't kill you too bad to download them IMO.
