multi nested quoting
I have read this before in a post, but have never read a topic dedicated to it.
I personally hate nested quoting and if at all possible try to quote only a portion of text that is pertinent to my reply.
Just wondered what the rest of the group thinks about this? I feel its just pure laziness to quote a series of nested quotes, and counter-productive.
Let me ask how many of you when you see a page long nesting will just scroll to the end anyway looking for the author's remarks?
I do, and then I try to figure out just who the heck they are responding to! I find it verrrrry frustrating.
Comments??

j - I'm with you on this one. But I'm odd that way. I also don't care for email forwards!!! Sometimes I quote other posts, but I try to delete what I'm not referring to. Just the part I'm commenting about. Hey, maybe that's frowned upon? LOL
And in answer to your question, yes I scroll down to read the person's comments, I don't re-read the quoted part.

Mary, I totally agree about email forwards! Nested quotes on forums are bad enough. But in Yahoo groups (like the ones for ER), I used to get so many emails a day that I'd have to set it to digest mode so that I'd get about 20 messages all in one email. The problem was that half of those messages were forwards and people would just click reply, leave the original message attached, and then type their reply. So, by the time all the back and forth one-liner replies were through, I had already read the same thing 10 times over and over. The one-liners were bad enough! But when people wrote tomes on why Abby and Carter should be together or just what makes Kim better than Sandy for Kerry, in addition to all the headers and footers...those things could get LONG!
Both are a bit of a PITA, in my opinion.
Good post, J!

Here is my take on the posting situation...
I think that quoting is necessary so that people know what post you are referring to. Sometimes we go off on tangents inside threads or someone says something specific that you want to comment on. If you don't quote... the meaning could be lost.
Also... if several responses are nested inside the quote (and I have done this) it isn't out of laziness... it is used so that the person who is reading my post will know what the heck I am talking about... especially if the quotes are coming from a page or 2 back.
I think that quoting just to be quoting is silly even though I do it a lot. However, until the mods or admins ask me to stop I probably won't. I find the feature useful.

Perfect! ....quote...but only quote what is needed. If it's a short one...no problem, but long ones, more specifically as the title suggests "nested quotes", take the time to edit out what you don't need.
Garrett --- I agree with you, that quoting is necessary so we know which post you are replying to. I'm only b******g about the multitude of nesting.
