Nearly a thousand people in Orange paid their respects to a fallen American soldier. 19-year-old Lance Corporal Shane Goldman was a memberd of the United States Marine Corps. He died April 5th when he came under hostile gunfire in Iraq. Sally MacDonald reports tonight on the ceremony that honored a devoted soldier, son, brother and friend.
It was a hero's farewell for a young man who died in Iraq while protecting America's freedom. Lance Corporal Shane Goldman was a United States Marine. His friend and fellow Marine Steven Philips says Goldman loved serving his country.

"Me and Shane sat over many a meal at his house or a restaurant talking about it, how people over there loved us being there, and he loved helping them out."
Pictures of Goldman filled the lobby and sanctuary of North Orange Baptist Church. Loved ones sought comfort in the memories of each picture, memories that reminded them of Goldman's strength and dedication.

"There's a few times in life that a lot of folks will ever achieve their goals, and Shane was one who did it."
Goldman's uncle and pastor, Mark Coleman, thanked the Orange community for its prayers and support. Dozens of people stopped what they were doing and lined the streets of Orange during a funeral procession that stretched for miles. They waved American flags and said a prayer in honor of Goldman and his family.

"Words are inadequate to express what's in our heart and what we feel at this moment for what people of this area have done for the family."
Firefighters hung an American flag from their fire trucks high above MacArthur Drive. Law enforcement officers saluted family members as they passed underneath it. Goldman's family and friends say they are not bitter about the war. Instead they are proud Goldman was willing to make a sacrifice for the cause of freedom.

"All marines are marines to start with. We do what our President asks us to do, and we'll do it as a Marine does, carry out our mission, mission accomplishment."
A marine gave Goldman's mother and father an American flag. Reverend Lynn Ashcraft told them even though Shane's mission is over, the nation's mission in Iraq is not.

"Even as we lay Shane to rest, our hearts are with the young men and women that are giving their lives over there."
