Killer Asteroid?

#1 Postby azsnowman » Sun Mar 16, 2003 5:56 pm

I was watching the local news this morning and they had the head astronomer for Kitt Peak Observatory on, he said there is a killer asteroid heading towards earth and will pass within 1000 miles of us in the year 2007 :o Now, here's the kicker, he said just a SLIGHT change of it course would slam this thing right into the earth. The asteroid is said to be 3 miles wide, 1 mile long!!! A asteroid about the same size hit the earth EONS ago and created the Chicxulub Crater off the Yucatan Peninisula in the Gulf of Mexico that is 180 kilometres wide, they suspect this is the reason for the dinosaurs extenction. A asteroid this size would have the energy of 1 BILLION Hiroshima bombs, a fireball hotter than the sun, it would vaporize half of the worlds oceans, shockwaves would blast upward tearing the atmosphere apart and expell over a hundred trillion metric tons of molten rock into space. Almost immediatly an area larger than the size of Europe would be flattened, incenerating everthing in it's path, massive earthquakes would rock the rest of the planet, when the debris is blown into the atmosphere it would create hypercanes aross the whole planet ripping the landscape apart and would cause MASSIVE tsunamis that would level everything along ALL costal lines! When the molten debris returns thru the earths atmosphere, it would irridate the surface of the earth and roast everything in it's path and start great conflagrations that would lay way waste to most of the forests and grasslands and turn fully a 1/4 of all living things into ashes!

Now that I've made you day "LOL!" Pretty scarey thought but ya know, if this does happen, what are we gonna do? Abandon earth

Dennis, THANKS FOR MAKING MY DAY!!!!  :grr: :grr:

I have heard nothing of this, but that means nothing. I, to say the least will be interested to see if we hear more about this!!!

If an asteroid that size passes within 1000 miles of earth all hell will break lose whether it hits or not. I surely hope this is not a real threat!!!

I'll do some research into this matter, the guy who was on is a very reputable astromomer for Kitt Peak near Tucson!

I know, the news just keeps better gettin don't it!

Here's some info I found!

The following table lists potential future Earth impact events that the JPL Sentry System has detected based on currently available observations. Click on the object designation to go to a page with full details on that object.

Sentry is a highly automated collision monitoring system that continually scans the most current asteroid catalog for possibilities of future impact with Earth over the next 100 years. Whenever a potential impact is detected it will be analyzed and the results immediately published here, except in unusual cases where an IAU Technical Review is underway. For more information on impact monitoring and risk assessment see our Impact Risk Introduction and Frequently Asked Impact Risk Questions.

It is normal that, as additional observations become available, objects will disappear from this table whenever there are no longer any potential impact detections. For this reason we maintain a list of removed objects with the date of removal.

Where is 1950 DA?

Table Legend
Object Designation
Temporary designation or permanent number for this object. Assigned by the Minor Planet Center.

Year Range
Time span over which impacts have been detected. Typically, searches are conducted 100 years into the future.

Potential Impacts
The number of dynamically distinct potential impacts that have been detected by Sentry. There can be several qualitatively unique pathways to impact in a given year, e.g., some with an extra revolutions around the sun, others deflected to impact by an earlier planetary encounter.

Impact Prob. (cum.)
The sum of the impact probabilities from all detected potential impacts.

Vinfinity
The velocity of the asteroid relative to the Earth, assuming a massless Earth.

H
Absolute Magnitude is an intrinsic measure of brightness. It is the apparent magnitude of the object when it is 1 AU from both the sun and the observer, and at full phase for the observer.

It's a little complicated to read but here's a one instance on how to read it, the 3rd set of #'s in each line is the year a strike could happen, the 4th # is the # of chances one could hit in those years!, take for instance, the first set of numbers, between 2008-2013 there are 203 chances that one could hit!

Shew. Its so hard to judge these things b/c half of them that are coming in our general direction cannot be found. I guess you can't do much unless it is a small one...and if its our time to go then so be it. I can't worry about that stuff anymore...scary!

Here's the irony of dying from an asteroid collision.

Chances are minute - even one stands a better chance at winning a lottery. Yet if such an asteroid collision occurs, it affects everyone on Earth.

There Was Nothing

#15 Postby Aslkahuna » Mon Mar 17, 2003 12:42 am

on our local news about it so either it was a new discovery that hasn't been confirmed yet or it was an error. However, from its size (5X2km roughly), it would probably not be a full sized ELE if it did impact but would just basically send what would be left of the Human Race back to the Stone Age. However, we have that capability ourselves already and certainly Al-Qaida and the radical Muslims want to take us at least back to the Dark Ages. Difference between a major impact and nukes of course is that there's no lasting radioactivity with the impact.
