Strong winds, heavy rain pound Houston area
khou in Houston
10:58 AM CDT on Saturday, May 1, 2004

From 11 News Staff Reports

A storm system swept through the Houston area Saturday morning bringing high winds, heavy rains, sporadic flooding and as much as 6 inches of rainfall in some areas. Damage to buildings was reported in the Tomball, Spring, and Conroe areas.

CenterPoint Energy's Alicia Dixon announced approximately 40,000 customers were without power starting around 9 a.m. Saturday. Most of the outages were north of 1-10, she said.

Street flooding was reported at FM 1960 and I-45 as well as 1-10 and Gessner. Tomball closed several roads including FM 2920.

11 News Mike Zientek reported that windows were blown out at the Bank of America building on Tomball Parkway as well as several cars nearby. Also an apartment complex in the area had damage to its roof.

I am located just on the east side of the 8 in the circle on the west side of the radar images. Finally starting to let up some here.

I'm just on the inside of the 8, at the far SW corner of between 610 and 8.. Street is completely flooded, pond is overflowing (again) and rain gauge reads a little over four inches. Still raining here, but now have more wind and thunder and lightning so i am SURE my barbequing is out of the question now. Just waiting for mass fish exodus from my pond!!!!!

I10 and Gessner is just down the street from me. We are now getting some minor street flooding in our area. Seeing more pictures of buildings with roofs that have collapsed or been blown apart.

Main threat now will be flooding for the rest of the day-currently under flash flood warning- with more rain moving in from the West. Still having moderate rain here at the house.

Still waiting. On KHOU, they're saying that we're still in for it here in Galveston but it won't be here until about 1:00.

On the bottom map that Chad posted, I'm near the top of the "t" in Galveston.

The line doesn't look bad at all now that it's about to hit Lafayette. Looks like all the energy got sucked away back in Texas and now we'll just a have long afternoon and evening of rain. This is good news since we've had 7" of rain in the past week and the river here is just under flood stage.

Today should bring more of the same as yesterday, however thunderstorms should remain mostly below severe limits, w/ HVY rainfall the primary concern.

tomorrow (SUN) is a much different story. increasing Mid LVL flow of 25-35 KT, combined with convergence along the ERN FL sea breeze boundary should provide a focus for convective initiation during the afternoon hours as BLYR destabilization occurs.

Instability should not be lacking either as mixed layer CAPE values approach 1500 J/kg. 700-500mb Lapse rates will increase to between 6.0-7.0 DEG C/km over central FL between 12z and 15z SUN, and then shift SWD across SFL between 15z and 18z.

Heavy rainfall and isolated DMG winds are the main concern for tomorrow.

I need to get a boat so I can go and get my mail. I've got a flowing river from the front of my house, going around to the back and out of sight...into Pine Island Bayou. The rest is just a lake.

And it's still raining here.

Check out all the convection blowing up offshore. Somewhere in south-central of southeastern is going to get hammered later today.
