Hurricane Andrew Revisited

#1 Postby Guest » Wed Apr 28, 2004 7:42 pm

With a month to go before the start of the 2004 Hurricane Season, take a look back at Hurricane Andrew & the damage it inflicted
on South Fla.

Let these images serve as a reminder as to what a major hurricane can do to a community & the people that live there.

ENJOY

This is the most prettiest/scariest radar image I've ever seen.

If these pictures don't say CAT 5 I don't know what does!

Here is that absurd conspiracy theory about Hurricane Andrew, makes for good reading.
Hurricane Andrew Conspiracy

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Going through Andrew was quite an experience for me,though I was 20 miles north of the most destructive winds,it was impressive needless to say.. I won't soon forget the sights & sounds I saw & heard.

The erie glow of the lightning/transformers,the sound of the wind, tree limbs breaking & the vibrations that went through the house because of those gusts of wind..I could only imagine what was happening to the south of me.

Even for me, a guy who has been into hurricanes since I was 9 was a bit frightened at the height of that thing & being without power,in the middle of night & not knowing exactly where the eye was & if it was going to wobble 1 way or the other & affect me had me on pins & needles for sure.

I did know what type of monster I was dealing with, this was no tropical storm or CAT 1 cane,I knew that some one was getting devastated by this & if even the fringe of the eye came near me all hell was going to break loose even worse than what I was getting already,& that was a pretty scary thought.

Even though the storm came & went relatively quickly it seemed like it would never end.

Well I still would like to be in that CAT 1 or CAT 2 cane this season even though I know that down here a CAT 1 or 2 can become a 3,4,or 5 very quickly, but being in a major hurricane is more scary than it is fun so like Typhoon Willie says "Be careful what you ask for! You just may get it!"

After the storm can be worse the storm itself, there was basically no law down in South Dade after Andrew ,it was like some bizarre other world down there for a few weeks.Hopefully our government won't let a situation like that take place again & respond quickly & have people in place ready to take action before the disaster even occurs.

Unfortunately, we are more than likely to see images like this again someday,if there is an Andrew headed for you, take it seriously, make sure you are prepared for the worst & hope for the best because it can kill you or make your life a living hell even in the best case scenario.

I voted yes, but with the caveat that I am in a Hurricane proof building with huge hurricane proof windows.(yes I know this does not exist!!) I went through Camille(not at the center) and saw the aftermath first hand and that is something I would never wish on my worst enemy, but the thought of being able to safely witness a CAT5 is to say the least EXHILIRATING for someone lilke me who like you has followed canes for almost 50 years!

I voted no ...

Been through Hugo in 1989, and believe me, I couldn't take one stronger ...

1) I'd be throwing up continuously b/c of by nerves.
2) I don't have enough pairs of underwear to be THAT SCARED.
3) Hugo was frankly enough, and I still remember that storm like it was yesterday.
4) See rule #2 ... addendum ... I'm only 130 lbs, and CANNOT AFFORD to lose ANY MORE WEIGHT ...

I voted no as I suffered thru Hugo and Georges without power and water for 2 weeks and I know first hand what a hurricane cat3 can do as both of them passed thru as 3's.

I've been through Gloria (1985) and Bob (1991). Both times far from the center. Peabody in Gloria. East Longmeadow in Bob. Ironically, the eye of Gloria went over East Longmeadow.

If I was to experience the hurricane from the center of the storm, I'd be content to go through a Category 1.

So, I guess my answer would be no.

Besides, with my luck, if I ever went through a Category 5, I'd probably end up going through it with Greatone. Now THAT I would not wish on my worst enemy!

Well kinda like vbhoutex said if I had a state of the art hurricane proof building with hurricane proof windows & all the necessary supplies I would vote yes, but the down side is that the city where I lived would still be devastated so its a tough call.

Since I have none of the above I voted NO.

I'll just settle for a strong CAT 1 or 2.

Anyone who says they would like to experience a cat 5 doesn't understand nature. Whether it was Homestead or More Ok in May 99. The complete destruction of a killer storm is to be avoided. I had a chance to drive through the farm areas west of Homestead and I still have trouble berliving to low death totals from Andrew.

Hurricane Andrew revisited

#10 Postby cajungal » Fri Apr 30, 2004 9:56 am

I did go through Hurricane Andrew. Although by the time it crossed us here in Louisiana, it weakened. I thought the winds sounded really intense here. And I can't imagine what the folks in South Florida went through. I have always been curious of what it was really like. But, I hope another Andrew does not hit here. I would be scared to death. Lots of people would lose their lives and drown here in coastal southeast Louisiana.

I must respectfully disagree with you on this point. I went through Camille and have also seen the utter and complete destruction that a CAT5 storm causes. I was 120 miles from landfall and had 100 mph winds where I was. Like I posted earlier I would never wish a CAT5 on my worst enemy, but the thought of being able to witness AND SURVIVE it is exciting, probably not feasible, but exciting. That is why I put the impossible caveat with my earlier post.

I CAN GUARANTEE YOU I UNDERSTAND MOTHER NATURE AND HER FURY ALL TO WELL CONSIDERING SOME OF THE EXPERIENCES I HAVE HAD in my almost 53 years on this planet.

I voted a big NO NO. That would just be to darn scary for me. I love tracking canes, and have only been in a TS, but even that wind was on the nasty side and it took me a half a bottle of Jack to calm the ol nerves (ok the excuse was good though!)

That piece of plywood through the palm tree leaves me hypnotized.

Truly amazing.

I went through Andrew in Florida, and I voted yes in the event another one heads my way. I missed a few things during Andrew because I did not know what to expect at that time. I would take a second chance to experience this with what I know now and I'd perfer during the day. I do know this is very serious stuff, but I wont leave my home if one comes again. I set up a web page a long time ago with some pictures that I took. http://www.geocities.com/pantherheat/

No, not my cup of tea. I do like storms, but widespread damaging storms, I don't think so!
