Yes to Dell, NO to Gateway. gateway is having financial difficulties, and will or have closed their stores. The only place you will be able to buy a gateway soon is via teh internet. Dell on the other hand has the market scrambling to keep up.
Oh, could your dad use an older son? I really need a laptop too!!!

There are really 2 different kinds of wireless networks. One is just for local use, within a business or home. For that you just need the hardware (wireless card and router/hub). This technology uses the same radio band as 2.4 Ghz wireless phones so there is a chance of interference.

The second wireless networking is based on a cellular network. The throughput is about twice that of dial-up but better than no connection at all. :-) Usually you buy the card and then play a flat monthly fee. We pay around 86.00 a month with Verizon. They have pretty good coverage across the country . :-)

I'd spend the extra to make sure the laptop was wireless capable.

My next PC will be a laptop, and it will be wireless. Hopefully that is a couple years away and by then they will all come that way!

Good luck in your search.

I keep hearing about the Intel Centrino. Anyone familiar with that and know what it is?

I ordered the laptop yesterday at a Dell outlet kiosk at the local mall. I decided to go with the Inspiron 5150, as per Marshall's advice. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

Good choice, you'll love it! I just sold my 8200 laptop and switched back over to a desktop (dell 8300). This thing is powerful with 3.2 gig processor and a nice 17" lcd monitor :D.
