#1 Postby azsnowman » Mon Mar 17, 2003 6:55 pm

Just curious, how many of us here are Vets? I served in the USN from 1976 till 1980, I was a ASH3 (aviation support hydraulics technician 3rd class petty officer) Duty stations were: Boot Camp, USNR San Diego, Calif: US Naval Air Rework Facility, Mellington Tenn.: US Naval Air Station Adak, Alaska: USS America CV-66. Upon discharge I enlisted in the National Guard in Show Low, Az......stayed in for another 4 years. The unit in Show Low when I was there was an ordinance company, they are now a transportation company and are currrently deployed to Iraq!

As you know...

Dennis. As you know, US Army Signal Corps. 1969-1970.

Drafted from a teaching position in Illinois (the only teacher to be drafted from our county!), I took basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, AIT in Fort Gordon, GA, and then spent all of 1970 in or near Nha Trang, South Vietnam.

While only 18 months and 6 days of active duty, it changed my life in many good ways.

Reaching the rank of SGT in just 15 months, I received both an Army Commendation medal and the Bronze Star for my work with the kids and teachers outside the base in a tiny hamlet of Thai Thong.

It was on one rainy day there that I finally came to terms with why the hell I was in Vietnam.

The answer was in the eyes and smile of a 6-year-old named Tam.

I shall never forget her. I would like very much to thank her.

She would be near 40 now.

Unfortunately, I was a rebellious fool. I wasn't into such things. I learned too late in life what things to value and what not too. I appreciate all of those who lay down their lives to protect me and those who are and aren't as foolish as I was.
