Sayings That Stick With You...

#1 Postby azskyman » Mon May 17, 2004 8:35 pm

A bumper sticker today reminded me of a couple of sayings that have stuck with me over the years.

...To be trusted is a bigger compliment than to be loved."

and straight from my son Jason's tattooed right shoulder, "Every man dies; not every man really lives." (That's the sticker I saw today, too.)

...and not quite in the same serious tone, of course, was "One time at bandcamp,...." (another bumper sticker I remember seeing recently.)

Any that you carry with you...good, bad, funny, or otherwise, that will occasionally pop up in your head?

My all time favorite said...

"My Wife's Other Car is a Broom"

I laughed so hard until I felt my wife's elbow punch sharply into my ribs!

Two things my mom always said -

~Remember who you are and act accordingly.

...and...

~However...comma (while reading school papers and reminding me to use "However," instead of "But,"

This is bad, but my mom used to say "s**t fire, save matches"

That always made me ROFLMBO!

Sorry, didn't mean to be bad.

My brothers and I spent fun summers camping with my dad. And in time my brothers' wives tagged along, as did my first husband. And his family. So we'd get quite a group going camping every summer holiday weekend, with a few more weekends thrown in. Fishing, skiing, card games, beer, etc. At some point someone would tell some outrageous tale, too crazy to be believed. Or some awful joke. And my dad would always say...

"there goes another flock of them....." while looking up at the sky, implying there goes another crazy flock of birds. Now did we ~really~ understand that saying? NO! But he always meant - you're crazy! So thru the years everyone else started saying that and then asking themselves, where did he ever come up with that saying? My dad's been gone for over 15 years now. And I still laugh at that saying when I remember back. A few close friends even said it to me at his funeral, as I was walking with them to the door (family of the ex's), just to cheer me up. It made me cry more, but it was a good cry.

My Dad used to say "Suffer a little, it's good for your character". So when times get tough, I just looked at it as making me stronger.

I literally carry this one with me everyday, which I have as a tattoo.

There are some awesome posts in this thread. Marshall, you've got me LMAO! Ed, that is soooo true, never would have thought of that on my own. And this may be off topic, but I loved Russell Crowe in Gladiator. Thanks for the reminder Bill! ;)

A good one is "Consider the source and forget it." This is useful when someone insults or hurts you.
