Public Weather Advisory # 487
[NNDPWA]
USA Weather National Nowcast Division
Public Weather Advisory # 487
12:19 PM EDT Monday, May 24, 2004
For: East Nebraska, Southwest Iowa, Much of East Kansas and Western Missouri
Concerning: Tornado
***The National Nowcast Division has issued a *Tornado Advisory* for Eastern South Dakota, Southwest Minnesota, Northeast Nebraska, and Northwest Iowa until 8:00 pm CDT***
Tornadoes...Hail to 3.5 Inches in Diameter...Damaging Thunderstorm Winds to 85 MPH...Dangerous Lightning...and Heavy Rainfall are all possible in the advised area.
Discussion: Scattered storms currently breaking out in SE Nebraska and NE Kansas are growing rapidly. Weak inversion still in place will give way in the next few hours and allow for explosive supercell development in the region ahead of a surface low pressure system. As inflow increased to 30 knots by 3 pm, an EHS upgrade will likely be required for this region.
If Severe Weather approaches your area...SEEK SHELTER IMMEDATELY! Go to an interior room on the lowest floor of your home or business until the danger has passed.
Stay with USA Weather, NOAA Weather Radio, and local media oulets for continuous coverage on the developing dangerous situation...

It is very rare for tornado watches to last over 10 hours (with the exception of landfalling tropical cyclones), but taking a look at the soundings and latest data (during my lunch break), and time runs short, but the data and soundings are absolutely frightening ...
Some locations within the high risk today may see 4-5" diameter hail, isolated wind gusts over 100 mph yet again, and we just might get an F5 today ...

For once, I'm glad I'm not the one who will see severe weather. That's just... BAD!

Oh and good luck to everyone threatened! Hope you have a basement.

and here's the thing folks, we have not seen an F5 tornado since Moore, Oklahoma in 1999. That gives you an idea that this situation may favor F5s. This is an extremely dangerous situation and folks that have tornado warnings and are in the direct path might want to just forget the basement of their house and head underground or into a safe room instead. That's my only option to you folks living there today.
More updates as neccessary. Definitely scary as hell.

Wouldn't doubt that Howard Rubenstein and his chase crew from OU may be headed towards that general area!

When you say that, all I have to say is "oh, oh..."

Sure do. My room is in the basement, weather central!
Brian, there is no way your room is going to keep you safe from 300 mph winds
