Haiti was just hit by a 4.4 earthquake!

This is especially notable since quakes are not exactly common there. And on top of the horrific floods and deaths, this is really sad and devastating. Prayers for those folks.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - An earthquake Saturday struck a flood-ravaged region along the Dominican-Haitian border, including a river town where more than 440 people were killed in floods this week.

There was no immediate word on damage or injuries, and it was impossible to reach the town of Jimani by phone.

The 4.4-magnitude quake lasted for four seconds, said Jose Luis German, spokesman for the National Emergency Commission. He said its epicenter was on the Haitian side of the border.

Such a quake can cause moderate damage in normal circumstances but could prove more devastating because of torrential floods and mudslides this week. At least 1,100 people have been killed in the disaster, according to conservative government tolls that account only for bodies recovered.

With villages isolated by floodwaters, the U.S. military has been using helicopters to ferry emergency aid to thousands of homeless and hungry survivors.

Just found this info. There were later ones, too, but this was one of the worst:

1842, May 7. earthquake. Shook whole island. (see Heinl, p. 177) 10,000 people dead in O Kap. Wrecked P-a- Paix, Mole St. Nicola, O Kap and Fort Liberte. Hit Dominican Republic too. See Rodman, Black Republic. He claims the Citadelle was seriously damaged by this quake. See Sir Spenser St. John, p. 12. He claims several thousand died. Also p. 87 "...which injured every city in the northern department, and almost annihilated Cap Haitien." In the letters of Herbert Tyson, (USN) he says "The town is not, at present, a place of much importance, having been destroyed by an earthquake in 1841, at which time about six thousand people perished. It had then a population of from sixty to seventy thousand, and was one of the largest towns on the island. Now there are scarcely six thousand persons in it." He misreports the date as 1841, but he was operating from discussion with people when he was there in 1865.

I don't know about Haiti but usually elsewhere in the World a magnitude 4.4 earthquake is usually not considered to be a significant or damaging event.

Aslkahuna is correct. a magintiude 4.4 is not a serious event at all. and there literally are hundresd of earthquakes daily in the waters surrounding the Cairbeban islands..Most don't make it to land, but we feel tremors here quite frequently.
so I assume that the quake in Haiti was of minor importance, thank God.
those poor peopel have quite enough to deal with already.

Yeah..Torrential rains that killed thousands,a moderate earthquake to a allready fragile society..I sure hope that they get thru the rest of the hurricane season unscathed!

I agree. Charleston on August 21st, 1992 (specifically Summerville, SC was where the epicenter was) registered a 4.4 magnitude earthquake that lasted for about 10 seconds (there seemed to be two separate explosions and a pretty decent shaking), but there was only very minimal damage, although things shook pretty good down here.

They might be experiencing aftershocks maybe from Montserrat ( Soufriere Hills ) since that volcano is highly active. Or there might be some major geological shifts in the mountains of Haiti/Dominican Republic. Either that or the caribbean plates in that region are just being active and causing earthquakes among the islands. That region is geologically unstable.
