What's up with the blue dot?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

What's up with the blue dot?

#1 Postby hurricanetrack » Tue Jun 08, 2004 9:24 am

Look at the OTIS shot:

https://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/products/OTI ... nomaly.gif

Notice the blue "hole" in the Pacific just west of 180 and right on the equator. Maybe it's a 13 degree drop in SST that spells the beginning of a new ice age. Sorry- had to throw that in. I do wonder though what would cause a round area of much below normal SSTs. Strange.

Upwelling caused by a typhoon in the area?? I haven't followed the Pacific closely so I am just speculating.

Either one of two things ...

1) Upwelling caused by a typhoon
2) Bad/Missing Data ...

I go with #2 because typhoon Conson is well away from where that dot is.

*sigh* that is where that idea was borrowed from. Sadly enough that was not an original thought. ;)

I don't think it was original when the guys that did TDAT used it either.

It's a sign that the polar ice caps are melting and two new ones are forming at two points on the equator!

A strange one indeed. Also note the very warm SST's for this time around Alaska and the North Atlantic, Ice caps melting?

While these cool spots are kinda strange, they really aren't all that uncommon if you monitor the OTIS site daily. We get a couple spots like this every couple months and they usually fade away slowly.
