Looks like a TD now

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Looks like a TD now

#1 Postby Derek Ortt » Sun Jun 13, 2004 2:06 pm

Just looked at some sats and this CLEARLY looks as if it is a 25KT depression. Would be shocked if this is not classified by NHC as such at 5

Not too surprised, despite TPC use of the word slight not that long ago.

Very interesting, especially coming from you, Derek.

I agree...the system is blowing up nicely and quickly this afternoon. We could have a tropical storm by later this evening.

A tropical storm by evening will be some rapid development. The ongoing discussion from Miami and on the board is for some slow development.

I agree, but, it's got some surprises in for us...it COULD develop very quickly as the day progresses. We'll see. I've just watched these systems blow up so many times over the years... http://www.wunderground.com/global/Regi ... llite.html

I hope it moves toward the southeast US. We really need the rain.

I'm plotting the recon reports and from what I've seen so far, I'd be very surprised if they call it a TD. Max estimated sfc winds so far are 10 kts with a pressure 1010mb. Looks like they found a broad weak swirl at the surface around 23.4N/94.5W, or about 70nm southwest of the blob of convection in clear air, for the most part. They're not flying up in the area of squalls, however, the plane did estimate south winds at 10 kts in the western part of that blob of thunderstorms near 24N/93W.

Doesn't look like a TD according to the reports. Satellite can be deceiving.
