Severe Weather Statement?

I don't recall ever seeing a "severe weather statement" before. Help me out with this one folks; It's new to me...

The purpose of severe weather statements (AWIPS ID - SVS) are to provide the public with updated information on pre-exsting severe thunderstorm or torando warnings. A severe weather statement may also be used to cancel a warning, or relay damage reports.

In other words, it's sort of like a warning "status message".

They are issued to provide more information after a warning has been issued. They used this a few weeks ago during the severe weather in Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri... as well as during the OKC tornado a few years ago.

We get "SPECIAL weather statements" here every time during our afternoon severe thunderstorms..

The last time I think we had a severe weather statement was either during Gabrielle, or our 1998 tornado outbreak

I have to respectfully disagree, John. Here are some Severe Weather Statements that I pulled up from your NWS Office's website.

You are correct, though; most of the Florida NWS offices do issue Special Weather Statements (not necessarily an HWO) indicating current trends and whatnot. But ALL NWS offices issue Severe Weather Statements to update Tornado/Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.

Yup... I have heard these Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service in Melbourne, FL many times.

These statements are common from the Natinoal Weather Service in Taunton, MA, too.

No problem Plus, unless it dealt with a tornado warning, I don't think Severe Weather Statements are issued typically for hurricane/tropical storms. That is what the Hurricane Local Statement is used for.
