This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

#1 Postby Opal storm » Mon Jun 14, 2004 5:23 pm

Right now we are getting somewhat of a break off a very wet and long day here in Pensacola. Not over yet though, local forecasts showing the worst of it late tonight maybe early tomorrow morning, heavy thunderstorms, possible tornadoes and gusty winds(nothing damaging).Coastal flood warnings are already up.Its possible we could see this all over again tomorrow.

Enjoy. It's been raining at least 2 hours straight here in Metairie. We're probably at 2.5" for the afternoon. The doppler estimated rainfall totals for the last 36 hours are starting to pile up around SE LA and S MS. Most of them have been backed up by viewers with rain gauges. 6-8" seems to be the most concentrated amounts in a few places, with 2-4" everywhere else.

The thing that surprised me the most today was how much rain was W and SW of New Orleans. I know that's closer to the center and all, but it looked like the bulk of the storms would have been from me east (not that they weren't, they just extended a little further west than I expected). But it's a weird setup now with the Gulf Low expected to move onshore early tomorrow but a stuck ULL in East Texas pumping gulf moisture into the SE. One of the "Future Casts" on Channel 4 predicted a pretty persistent swath of feeder moisture training across the NW Panhandle tomorrow.

Here are the rainfall estimates. Most of this has been since yesterday afternoon:

Here are the doppler radar estimates from KMOB (Mobile):

Some locations have recieved 3 inches and above thus far, although it appears that Pensacola Beach and areas west of there got a deluge too.

Well, we love tropical cyclones and disturbances; so abundant tropical moisture is part of the game.

The night Isabel came in, sitting in the back of my Subie along a river 130 miles inland...I was doing on-air updates on the flooding. We had incredible rain; areas had 9 inches of rain that night and the DP was around 74°. Wasn't funny up here but I kept thinking "THIS is why I love a good hurricane???". LOL.
