::looks at the 1998 tracks::

That's weird. Georges's track indicates it at Category 5 status briefly.

Having no activity in June or July for that matter is by no means unusual :wink:

I didn't say it was unusual, as you can see there are several hurricane seasons that started late July or August, and at the end were very active. Also there are some that I didn't illustrate that started in May or early June and at the end they were not active.

1997 is a great example. There were 4 named storms by the end of July. Then El Nino took hold and only 3 more named storms happened.

I think El Nino seasons can be interesting if the named storms are spaced out in a way. Like one named storm a month or something.

Do El Ninos ever take "breaks"? I mean do conditions ever temporarily revert back to neutral for maybe a month or two and then resume?

Do you think 2005 is going to be an El Nino year? They seem to happen every few years.

If you look at some Hurricane Seasons that started late, some of the most intense hurricanes hit Florida during a late season ( Example would be Hurricane Andrew ) first storm of the 1992 season which started in August. Im not saying that every late season Florida gets a bad storm...but its just interesting to see. There is a Category 4 storm that hit North of Miami in 1949, Hurricanes King and Easy in 1950, and then some weak storms in 1984, 1985, Hurricane Gordon, Hurricane Earl.
