Big time negative SOI

#1 Postby hurricanetrack » Sat Jun 19, 2004 11:33 pm

Ok- let's put our collective heads together and figure out why the SOI has gone so far negative in the last few days. It has really tanked again to minus 44 now. Could the big typhoon in the WP have afftected the pressure between Tahiti and Darwin? If so- then there's nothing to worry about. If not, then I am really scratching my head as to why the SOI would suddenly plunge so deeply negative.

Most of the large SOI variations are MJO related. The long term average has been near 0 over the last several months despite these large fluctuations. As a result, SSTs have been about the same.

MJO and SOI

#3 Postby hurricanetrack » Sat Jun 19, 2004 11:53 pm

Yes- I noticed on a link that Luis posted that the MJO was quite prevalent in the west Pac. I would love to see the SOI 90 day get above 0 for once. Don't know why- just a hump that cannot seem to "be gotten over".

Maybe it's waiting for August.
