Well, after months of working on it, it's finally here! My field team and I have a live weather/web cam program that we wrote for our missions this season. It's up and running at my office/home in North Carolina. Check it out at the link below. The program takes wind data from an RM Young anemomter and data logger and sends it up to my site every minute. It also uses data sent via my Davis instruments Weather Monitor II (pressure, temp, dewpoint, humidity and rainfall). And finally, it uses the web cam shot coming from the vehicle every 15 to 30 seconds or so.
So far, everything works well. We are using only a massive deep cycle battery to power the laptop, the data logger and the inverters to power them. To date, I've had the equipment running for 32 hours+ with a single charge! Imagine what we'll be able to do in the next big hurricane. The object is to place the vehicle that this data is coming from into the path of the next Andrew, Hugo or even a weak storm. But the advantage is, during a monster hurricane- we can leave the vehicle out there, tied down, running on the deep cycle battery- and watch from a safe location. Of course, we're using a Sprint PCS card to send the data- and as long as the cell towers work, we're good to go.
Anyhow- check it out. I'm quite proud of it since we built it from scratch. The program is in JAVA so it should work on anyone's browser- just make sure you have the latest JAVA plug-in from java.com.
