WHO KNOWN AN HURRICANE EYE?

How many of us knowed an hurricane eye?
My experience was in hurricane CLEO,in 1964,when the eye passed just over Basse-Terre(southern tip of Guadeloupe)at this time,Cleo was a strong cat 3,in way to become a cat 4,just afer leaving my location.
I will never forget the dead calm,with big waves being pumping in the harbourgh,and,then suddenly with a terrific noise,the south winds arriving over my location!This calm lasting only 15 minutes,due to the small size,and rapid movement of this hurricane.
Iwill also ever remembered,this man outside,which was standing like a flag,when the south gust arrived,hanging up to a pole wire!!!

The eye of Hurricane Opal passed about 6 miles west of me. I was at the Fort Walton Industrial Park because they had shelter there. The winds didnt calm down all the way. It was still raining and the winds dropped fairly quickly, i would say from 115mph to about 90mph..maybe less. It was getting dark since Opal didnt make landfall until about 6:00 P.M. You couldnt see alot of the damage and the winds soon started to pick up a few minutes later. We got the eyewall which is the most devestating part ( duh! ) and i swear the winds never fell to below 125mph at its peak time.

You was in the worst sector of this hurricane,the NorthEst,where the winds are strongest,and,no lull!This was the case,for the territories of Nest of Guadeloupe,when Hugo passes by,in 1989,leaving a trail of desaster,and gusts of 160knots(mesurement,from an anemometer!)

Was in the eye of Camille, Frederick and Elena. Hurricane Georges' eye was about 7 miles west of me. I missed it by a few miles, which left us in the southeast quadrant to get hammered.

Out of all hurricanes I have been through I have never NOT been through an eye. Georges was a first for me which made him seem stronger because we did not get a break from the winds.

it was Typhoon Emma, TY Irma (1974), TY Olga (1976) and TY Kim (1977). Irma's eye was the most spectacular as we saw full sunshine on a mountain 12 miles to our east which still under the inner edge of the eyewall and getting heavy rain and high winds.

I was in the eye of Cleo too, but in Palm Beach County Florida. I was almost four years old at the time, so my memories are a bit disjointed. I remember that there were a lot of people at our house (it was deemed safest of any of my relatives houses) and that the house was dark, and we used lots of kerosene lanterns and sterno and even a charcoal grill inside the boarded up house (real safe right). The eye, I had heard of the eye on TV or radio or something and wanted to see it. Dad and some cousins went outside during it. They wouldn't let me out, but i managed a peek. It was calm and grey. The calm didn't last long, dad and the others came back in in a hurry.

I also remember our poor key lime tree was uprooted by Cleo, then again later that year by Isbell. After it was uprooted a third time by Betsy the next year it died and I was sad.

Oh yeah, the "eye" of Irene passed just west of my house here. No calm as it wasn't a proper eye, but the winds did spin around 180 degrees fairly quickly. That's how I knew where it was, and figured I could go to bed, that the worst was over.

Andrew's eye passed about 20 miles to my south in 1992...which was far enough away that it didn't tear off the roof or blow windows in. That's as close as I ever want to be to another storm like that.

The thing that still sticks with me even now is the sound outside. The unrelenting hiss of the wind...interrupted by something banging against the house...and wondering what every new noise means. I just remember wanting that hissing noise to stop...and to see the trees outside stanginf upright again.

The center of "hurricane" Irene passed right over my house in '99. But it's hard to call that an eye...still trying to figure out how Irene was a hurricane.

I caught the East corner of the eye of Fredrick in 79. We had about 10min of dead calm which my brothers put salad bowls over their heads, just in case, to go re-board some windows. The wildest part was hearing the back side of the eye wall approach. It was at night, but I swear I could see cloud reaching all the way down to the ground. Maybe just the imagination of an 11yr. old, but A sight I will never forget.
The next morning, it looked like an atomic bomb went off. And we had a goat on our roof... Go figure.

I think I was in the eye of Hurricane Gloria.. 85-86? I dont remember, I was 10.. (dont laugh!!)... I remember it was sotrming and windy, then it was calm and kinda orangish colored out.. Didnt last long... Then it fired right back up again... I lived in Rhode Island at the time... That was the only hurricane I have ever been in..

I, too, was in Cleo. I recall being bummed my "tree fort" tree was blown over... and the calm was unsettling. Then we heard the wind coming - like a train in the distance. Very cool for an 8-year-old!

After the storm I went outside to find my tree back upright!

The eye of Hurricane Flossy in 1958(?) passed right over my house. We used that calm time to go pick up the neighbors trash cans out of our yard and take them back to them. We then went down to a neighbors for the rest of the storm and the parents played pinochle and drank while the kids played games waiting for it to end.

there was one that came over Tallahassee while I lived there in the early 60's. It was an a storm I believe, maybe Agnes. It was a Cat1 storm but the city lost tons of trees and we lost some rose bushes in our yard.

The eye of Alicia or what was left of it 50 miles inland went right over our house. It never cleared totally, but the winds going from 90 mph to 20 mph was dramatic to say the least. Me and a neighbors son went out and got ice during the calm of the eye. Don't remember where we could even get it, but we found some. We had lost power at 2am and this was around 9 or 10 am. I too remember the hissing of the winds and the sounds of things being destroyed and banging. Not just during Alicia, but also during Camille and several others I have experienced. And as stated, hearing the eyewall coming at you from the other side is indeed a frightening experience!!! I thought we were having another tornado(we had already had one take out the 30" maple in the front yard).

I have never been in a true eye of a hurricane, and although I don't want the damage it's definately something I wish to experience sometime in my life, as well as see a tornado because I've never seen one! (maybe do some chasing? ).

Frederic for me. It was well inland but the winds were still hurrifane strength. I remember the calm as the winds died and everything stopped. When the back half of the storm passed over us there was not nearly as much wind but lots of rain.

I was in the eye of Hurricane Isabel as it made landfall on the NC Coast last year. I was part of the DOW (Doppler on Wheels) Crew gathering high-resolution doppler radar data. Even though we only had Cat 1 sustained winds at the height of the storm at our location, it was still a heck of an experience, especially since I was never expecting that I would actually be able to be part of such a project. It was a great time!

The center of "hurricane" Michelle (2001) passed right over my house. Also hard to call it an eye (no more than a long lull with overcast skies)... and I'm also still trying to figure out how Michelle was a hurricane after looking at sat. pics from the time.
