New Orleans will recover but the potential is for major loss of life and property. I evac to Mississippi and the highway between New Orleans and Pearl River has water on both sides. It is build on what is basicly a swamp. My home is on the Westbank and I am just a few miles from a swamp. We are surrounded bu water--not an island but close--and we live on land that sits on water. Each day I look up to the River and see ships and barges sitting well above the street level. Allyou can think is god helpus if the levee breaks. A hurricane powerful enough could force the river out of its banks and all the protection levees will trap water in not keep it out.

Guess I won't still be driving across I-10, over the Atchafalaya Swamps, and then northward on I-55 towards KY for the holidays in 50 years. Then again, I probably won't need to drive to KY in 50 years anyway.
But dang, that's a heck of a major change on that map!

I don't why people are getting annoyed that they aren't on a particular spot on this list, I for one who live in NYC would not like to be on this list at all. Like a few others have said on here, this is just a list for insurance companies, on how much more they can charge for insurance property owners in one particular area. So they have some expert come up for this list for them. It really has no service to the public.
In reality a cat 4 or 5 hurricane would be equally catostrophe for any metro area in terms of the scale of destruction. I don't care what your geography or traffic is. As for deaths, there may be many but this the modern age, we are warned about these storms well ahead of time and are more prepared than ever. I doubt we would see 1000+ deaths. Hurricane Andrew's damage was catastrophic when it hit Florida, but I believe there were only like 25 deaths there.
