Cooked lettuce?

#1 Postby GalvestonDuck » Thu Jul 08, 2004 3:45 pm

I thought about this earlier at lunch and I remember posting it sometime ago in a Yahoo forum.

Is there any fruit or vegetable you can think of that is simply NOT eaten cooked or processed in any way? For that matter, is there any food -- in it's natural form -- that can ONLY be eaten raw?

Iceburg lettuce (and probably a handful of other lettuces) was all we could come up with. No one could stomach the thought of cooked lettuce.

Spinach can be raw or cooked.
Most other greens (if ya like 'em...blech!) get cooked.
All the vegetables we could think of can be boiled, added to soup, grilled, or pickled.
Watermelon rinds get pickled. Same with cucumbers.
A lot of fruits can be made into pies, jellies, or even sauces for meats (orange sauce on duck...hey now!)
Many meats get served cooked.
Milk can be processed, heated, made into hot chocolate.

I'm stumped...and thought I'd bring it to you guys. :)

Lettuce can be cooked. My mother and grandmother used to put hot bacon grease on lettuce for a wilted lettuce salad. Not very nutritious but it was good. I have not thought about that in years!

Ick! I've heard about that on spinach, but not on crispy lettuce. But, to each his own. :)

Well, I guess you answered my question, Bevgo! There's nothing out there that can't be eaten cooked. Of course, it's a matter of taste if you'll like it or not.

Thanks!

I've heard of hot slaw, too, w/ broken-up bacon in it and have tried it...and it was tasty! :)

Yup, I saw one of the cooking shows on Food Network where they made a kiwi-pineapple sauce to go with lamb. The kiwi pulp turns dark brown though and I didn't think it looked all that great.

Eric -- Hot slaw with lettuce...or with cabbage?

Yup, that's one of the ways we considered "processing." Besides "cooked" we wondered about any other ways (thus, "processed") to eat something besides just plain ole fresh, crisp, raw.

My grandparents put pickled watermelon rinds on their relish trays at parties all the time. So, nope...that one is out. :)

Eric -- you were talking about cabbage. Sauerkraut is also cabbage and it's cooked.

We're still trying to figure out lettuce. :)

Hate to tell you guys, but if you like Chinese food, you have probably eaten some cooked lettuce!

It's actually good--it's only the idea that is bothering you. If you actually watch a Chinese person cook Chinese food, you'll see cooked lettuce in lots of your favorite dishes...

There was a chinese restaurant up in Michigan that used to put lettuce in their Almond Chicken. It would be all mushy, slimy and wilted when you put in on your plate. Totally Gross. At least it was in big pieces so you could get rid of it.

Yeah, but they're fresh, right? Not cooked, grilled, pickled, or processed (aside from being sliced, diced, and mixed in) in anyway?

You might be on to something, Purdue.

And LOL! Who keeps digging up old threads? Not complaining...just laughing because it's happening in other forums also.

(Like I have room to talk -- I keep digging out the predictions again and again. :) )

LOL - that was the only vegetable/fruit I had in my apt that didn't seem cookable. I've had it in soup, but it was added at the last second. I would assume the enchiladas were warmed/cooked, but who knows?
