My first lightning photos

#1 Postby BritBob » Sat Jul 10, 2004 7:34 am

Some excellent thunderstorms rolled through the Moncton region last evening. Moving in with a classic squall line formation, we had gust fronts, constant lightning and deafening thunder.

I was out checking the classic car show downtown but knew we would get some exciting weather. I checked radar before we left home, but expected the line of cells to weaken before reaching Moncton.

They did not, and I had the pleasure of witnessing mother nature at it`s best.

Power went out, thunder sounded like a whip cracking, lightning lit up the whole town, low scud was illuminated by the lightning... I was in heaven!!

Anyway, I managed on my crappy old camera to get my first worthy lightning shots. I should hope so too, it took nearly 130 frames to get two!!!

Ps, Local news reports some problems nearby with downed trees, I heard fire trucks racing about for several hours. Not sure whether this was wind (straight line/vortice) or lightning damage, but I aim to find out.

The pics can be found here as there are a few :D

Great photos BritBob!

I just checked this, and surprisingly, Moncton Airport picked up just 13.6mm of rain!

Fredericton, to the west, received 10.2mm.
Saint John, to the south, saw 12.6mm.

I'm sure isolated areas saw higher amounts.

Yup, for the intensity of the storms, the precipitation was surprisingly lacking. Then again, places out of the airport may have seen much higher.
