Tough question Mike!!!

I have loved the weather and watching it since I was very young, nurtured by a father who was a weather weenie extaordinaire!!!

My first experience with a TC that I remember was in 1958 with Hurricane Flossy which came in right over Pensacola. I have followed them ever since either with my father or on my own as an adult.

I love learning more and more about the tropics and weather in general and what actually produces, steers, changes, etc. these weather systems. Of course that helps me with my "forecasting".

I have been through enough TD's, TS's, and Hurricanes to have actually lost count of how many it is. I am chastising no one here, but I find it disturbing that as many people have voted for "smash into my community" as have. I understand that everyone is thinking of the rush of really being in "the eye of the storm", but that rush is soon laid aside when you see the death and destruction around you after it passes. I would never wish upon my worst enemy what I saw/experienced with/after Camille, much less what I went through with Alicia.

Don't get me wrong, I will be out there chasing, reporting, etc. as long as I am able, but I also know when to stop, pack the bags and leave!! It sounds like fun and like a real rush, but if you get caught in a REAL HURRICANE, I can guarantee you will be SCARED unless yoou are downright crazy!!!

OK!! Rant off!!

I voted for tracking, don't care where it goes.

Younger days

#23 Postby bevgo » Fri Jul 16, 2004 9:38 am

In my younger, more foolish days I wanted a cane on my doorstep and a big one too. As I have grown older and wiser and have experienced a number of tropical storms, several close calls and 1 dying hurricane, I have decided that I would still love to experience a hurricane at full strength but only in a totally safe environment so I could enjoy the display of mother nature in all her fury but not have to be concerned with deaths, injuries, property destruction and the storm aftermath. I don't want to see anyone hurt or killed or to have to deal with loss but I really love the beauty and power of hurricanes. :grrr: 8-) 8-)

Excellent topic!
I see no one is scared of canes... lol ;)

With me it's a love hate relationship. I love watching them and learning about them. My husband thinks Im crazy because I say they are like living organisms with minds of there owns and even personality traits. On the otherhand it saddens me to see the deaths even a tropical storm can cause, let alone a cat 5. So I voted, I like to see a storm near my area and turn... Like HG said, I can say CRAP it's comming for me!!!

I like tracking them, but do not wish for them to make landfall. I will admit I love the anticipation of one coming my way, but that only lasts for about a day when the reality of it sinks in. I have no problem with the before and during. I do have a problem with the aftermath of them. No electricity for days and no water. One positive thing after a hurricane is, it brings communities together and neighbors helping their neighbors.

adrenilan junkie. I love the rush, but not the end result. When it gets TOO close to anyone it's not fun anymore, but when it goes harmlessly out to sea, there is no adrenilan rush...and therefore, the EPAC and the fish storms lose their magic for me.

Because of the choices, I ended up being the one percent (so far) saying I was scared of hurricanes. Coming here keeps me informed and teaches me and when it starts getting crazy, gives some great distraction from "battening down the hatches".
Growing up on the Florida coast, hurricanes were huge fun - getting out of school, great surfing, nature in her high state. Bringing in lawn furniture, filling up the tub with water was like a seasonal tradition. But somehow, always feeling safe, even if it wasn't true ;)
Now that I live in the islands, I still love nature, the power of weather to affect our lives, but what can be (if you are fortunate, have enough time, etc) avoided on the mainland can only be duck and cover here. So while I enjoy so much about hurricanes (and any other dramatic aspect of weather, wild or benign), I don't mind at all if they go to sea...too much damage, too long without too much for too many, and wondering who has the house that didn't blow away in Hugo or Georges or ___________ feels a bit less than safe!

I'd like to see one (and therock...means...one...) hurricane on a deserted island...that's it! After one, I wouldn't go try to see another...BTW I've been through the remnants of one, and came within days of one other...Opal in 1995 was extratropical by the time it came within 100 miles of me, and the other was Dennis in 1999 ( I was vacationing in Myrtle Beach, SC and we left just DAYS before this sucker hit the NC coast as a TS).
